We are visiting Zell am See for 2 nights and expect to use our full day in the area to drive our rental car over the Grossglockner Alpenstrasse. Does anyone know the length of the Alpenstrasse? How long does it take to drive the Alpenstrasse? I understand that there are many stops for views and excursions to particular sites. Is it likely that the driving tour will require the entire day if we leave Zell am See at 9 am?

No, you could do it much more quickly if you want. It is only 58 kms from Zell am See. When we did the pass, we just incorporated it into a journey from Villach up to Salzburg.
Hi,
The actual drive (one way) can be done in an hour non stop. The road itself is 48 kms long. It is slow going with the switchbacks, elevation changes, etc. Plenty of places to stop along the way. I'd stop in Heiligenblut (southern end of the Grossglockner drive) for an hour for coffee, lunch, whatever. Cute village in an extremely picturesque setting.
