GRINDELWALD: Hotel Residence, Steinbock or Gletschergarten?

My husband and I and our three kids are planning to stay in Grindelwald for 4 nights in July. We require a (comfortable, well located hotel, but not luxurious). We were hoping to spend under $200/night, but after checking alot of hotels, this does not seem possible. We narrowed it down to the above 3 hotels. The Gletschegarten is 340CHF ($266/night), the Steinbock 280 CHF ($219) and the Residence 260 CHF ($203). Anyone have any opinions /experience with these hotels? Thank you!!!

Chalet Hotel Gletschergarten was a great choice for our trip in September 2003. Our room had a wrap around balcony that had an unbelievable view of the Eiger. The husband and wife owners and their kids were terrific hosts, and always took time to help us on our questions regarding the area.

We found the food to be very good at the hotel restaurant. Finn (the husband) is the waiter, and he picked out a couple of nice wines. If you want to know a little more about hotel, type in "Europeans Rejoice" and my trip report will come up. It was a way too long report, but the part on Grindelwald isn't very far into it. It was our fourth stop on the trip. The report will also give you a little more detail about the area (hikes and stuff).

There are a few people who report on this board (I believe one is Bob Brown) who really have a lot of good info on the hiking in Grindelwald area, too. Have a great time. We really enjoyed the Grindelwald area and will certainly return to do some of the hikes we did not get to do last year.

My son and family liked the Gletschegarten in 2003. I am discouraged the prices are that high.

Maitai: Thanks for all the info. Your trip report was alot of fun to read. Bobtn: At the Gletschgarten they did add about 80 CHF per night to the normal price of the double superior room because of our kids. Also we are traveling in the highest season so we get to pay the highest rate at every hotel we book (this will probably be our first and last European vacation in July). Thanks so much for your input. Anyone out there have an objective opinion about the other two hotels?

My daughter and I stayed at the Gletschergarten for three nights in early June. We paid 210 CHF for a standard double, and we loved it. The hotel has multiple common rooms available to guests, including one in the basement with a ping pong and a pool table. The food was good, although we ate only one dinner at the hotel. (We had a great pizza at Onkel Tom's, just down the street from our hotel, and very good fondue at Memory, the restaurant at the Eiger Hotel.) We got excellent hiking suggestions from Elspeth and Finn. I highly recommend the Unter Lauchbuhl hike, accessed at the middle stop of the First cable car. It's about two hours across the mountain (not a very hard hike), ending at a road with a convenient bus stop to get back to Grindelwald. The scenery was glorious, even in a light rain. I look forward to going back, and I'll stay at the Gletschergarten when I do. I really liked the fact that the hotel is just slightly away from the more crowded part of town. I prefer not to be squarely in the middle of all the activity, but don't want to be too far out. Oh, the dining areas are very pretty. I don't have a single complaint about the Gletschergarten.
