Greek travel agencies in the U.S.
Hi. Does anyone know of a Greek travel agency in the U.S. (preferably in the Northeast) that would be willing to handle ferry/hydrofoil reservations for the islands? I've been having a great deal of trouble trying to reserve online with Greek agencies. Thanks.

Hi Tom, I went to Greece two yaers ago and booked all of my island transfers witha company called Triana Tours. They are out of Manhatten (800) 223-1273 or 212-245-3700. I mostly flew from island to island but i did do one ferry and they handled it no problem. Be aware though, ferries tend to leave when they want and not necessarily stick to the schedule. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the information, Kristina. I never would have thought that making a hydrofoil reservation would be so hard. I sent two e-mails and a fax to the people behind ferries.gr and never got a response. I had the same experience with a couple of other Greek agencies I tried. I'd be curious to know whether other people have encountered the same thing. Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll definitely give them a try.

You're getting an example already of how awkward travel arrangements can be in Greece. Even within Greece we found them not that easy. Ferry schedules came out only a week beforehand. We booked these mostly in Athens, then had no trouble, but this was in September.

Be very careful with reservations, and document everything. I hate to say it, because I loved the Greek people when I was there, but we had quite a lot of trouble with our reservations meeting expectation when we used a Greek company. Our primary contact was a yacht charter company, but we also (unfortunately) used their travel agency for airline reservations. Not only was Olympic Air an adventure, on the way home our friends found that they had been bumped without their knowledge from the return flight. There was absolutely no recourse, and little sympathy. It became pretty obvious that this was routine. In addition, the sailboat we chartered was in disrepair, and the owner tried to force us to pay for things that were wrong with it when we picked it up! Business is a little "looser" in Greece, and, while I highly recommend the country, it is fairly common to be disappointed on service.
On the other hand, the owner of the hotel where we stayed on Rhodes told us that Americans were teaching him how to do business! Apparently the higher expectations were making an impact.
