Greece & Turkey - 14 days - June 2013

We are two couples travelling to Greece and Turkey with 4 children (2 four year olds and 2 eight year olds) and need help with an itinerary. Ideally, we'd like to spend roughly equal time in each country (6-7 days each) and visit the major tourist places but not so many destinations that we'd have to dash from place to place every other day. Family/child friendly places are definitely preferred. In Greece, we were thinking of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini and in Turkey, Istanbul, Cappadocia and maybe one other place if possible. Any suggestions on itinerary, accommodation (esp. apartments), and things to do would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

That could easily take 10 days or more -- 5 or 6 for Istanbul, 3 or 4 for Cappadocia.

Thanks ssachida and kja for your inputs.

I actually left out the two June 1st and depart from Istanbul on the 16th, giving us 14 clear days and a couple of half days.

Are there any family friendly islands near Santorini for a day trip? And are there any overnight ferries with cabin/berth accomodation from Athens to Santorini?

Any thoughts on the Turkey leg of trip? What would a cruise on the Lycian coast include.

Lycian way:
I haven't used this company, but they do have good reviews. This is just for a sample itinerary: http://www.bluecruise.org/cabinchart...iye_north.html

Visit either
Greece
or
Turkey
or
the Aegean ares (without Cappadocia).
If you want to do it all in 2 weeks, you will mostly visit airports, bus stations and ferry piers.

Forget day trips from Santorini and check instead how you can go from Santorini to Turkey. It might look like this:
Tuesday:
Piraeus dp by ferry 7.25 - Santorini ar 15.10
Wednesday:
Santorini dp by catamaran 12.55 - Syros ar 16.30, Syros dp by ferry 22.50
Thursday:
Rhodos ar 10.10. Enjoy Rhodos, the first place of your trip with sandy beaches for your kids. Visit the walled medieval town of Rhodos, the stunning Greek temple of Lindos and as many sandy beaches with calm shallow water as you like.
Saturday:
leave Rhodos 8.30 by catamaran to Fethiye ar 10.00
Enjoy the famous sandy beach of Olu Deniz and visit the famous Lycian rock tombs
Monday:
go by bus to Myra and show your kids the church where St. Nicolas lived. Cointinue then to Antalya
Tuesday:
visit the huge excavation sites of Aspendos, Perge and Side
Wednesday:
go to Istanbul by low cost plane.
Use the remaining days for the visit of istanbul.

Greece and Turkey are very child friendly but you are trying to do too much in too little time. I would do Greece (14) or Turkey (14)and save the other country for a later trip. Don't underestimate the time it takes to ferry between the islands -most are 2-3 hours apart. Athens is worth 3-4 days and if you spent 3-4 each in Santorini and Mykonos that is most of your time. Personally, I would rather go to Rhodes for 10 days and do side trips to Symi (about 1 hour) or Kos (2 hours) and Bodrum, Turkey (1 hour), and come back and spend 4-5 days in Athens.
