Greece or Croatia OR Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Italy
I need help! My husband and I are not world travelers but we would like to take a big trip this year and I am struggling with destination(s). We are looking to book a 10 day trip and don't necessarily have a budget. First off, I'm struggling with Croatia or Greece. I've heard both are beautiful and that there is a lot to do/see in Greece. Obviously, if we chose to go there Austria/Switzerland/Italy would be OUT. If we chose Croatia though, then it looks like we could potentially fit one or two of the other countries above into our trip. I need help deciding though which would be best and how to plan to optimize our time. We are in our mid twenties, looking for a cultural and relaxing experience. We enjoy sightseeing to a point but would rather avoid spending a lot of time in the heavily populated/tourist areas. We love soaking up the scenery and discovering quaint little towns where locals hang. Your suggestions and advice would be much appreciated!

My only advice without more information is this, in 10 days do only 1 country. With 2/3 different cities towns maximum.
What time of year are you traveling?
Have you checked airfare in and out of the countries you are considering?
If you give the folks here a little more information it might help you more...

I agree with heart2travel -- with only 10 days, pick ONE country. And whichever you choose, realize that you will need to be VERY selective. For example, Croatia easily merits 2.5 to 3 weeks, just for its highlights. (I felt rushed with a trip of 4 weeks.) Greece, too, can easily merit more than a few weeks. If optimizing your time is a goal, then by all means, choose just one country, as the time you spend in transit is time you will not have to see or do anything on the ground.
I would strongly encourage you to consult some good guidebooks and map your options on a calendar. And ANY time you change locations, mark the time you need for your transportation itself, as well as some time on either side (for getting to/from your lodging, checking in/out, packing/unpacking, getting oriented, etc.).
Good luck!

Ditto, unless you do something like fly into Venice head over to the northern portion of Croatia called Istria, I can't think of many ways to make a trip encompassing multiple countries happen in 10 days (which is a great amount of time, just not when you start flying around to fit "more" in).

In 10 days, stick to one country. Going to any other country will take a whole day of travel and you will end up only having a couple of nights to see a few tourist highlights and no time at all to get to the less touristy places and discover quaint little towns.
If staying in Croatia, you could consider venturing into nearby Montenegro or Bosnia for a day or two, but that really is all you would have time for in 10 days. Furthermore, if travelling in the summer, be aware that most accommodation on the islands has 3 or 4 night minimum stays.

Gosh yes, I would also say choose one country - I don't know Geeece but I know Croatia well and have been travelling around it for years. I can tell you that I haven't managed to do everything in Croatia yet and that's because I also like to spend time in the less touristy places. Even if you went on a mission for 10 days through Croatia you wouldn't see half of the places and you wouldn't have the sort of experience I think you're looking to have anyway. I would also say that the northern part of Croatia (Istria) is more continental and very different to the southern more Mediterranean part of Croatia (Dalmatia) so it's not all the same anyway. You have so many old towns, Unesco heritage sites, islands and coastline to explore that you really do have more than enough for 10 days. It's all absolutely gorgeous and a very interesting place. I would second previous comments that if you did want to bring in other flavours to the trip you could do day trips to Venice from Istria or to Mostar in Bosnia & Hercegovina from Split or Dubrovnik.
