Greece in October, Santorini, Paros, Ios, and or Mykonos
Heading to the Islands in the first two weeks of October. We will definetly be going to Santorini but need help decieding on another island or two. 3 couples traveling together with 5 out of the 6 people never having traveled to Greece. Would like a good split between atmosphere, nightlife and physical activities (hiking, swimming, atvs, etc.) I am currently leaning away from Mykonos as I have heard mixed reviews. Suggestions for what areas to stay on the island and any other tips welcomed!
thank you!

mariha2912 thanks for the quick reply. Weather seems to be getting warmer in October than previous years but we do know that it is unpredictable but we really want to stay out on the islands.

Check out travelwise.com; there is an article on the best time to travel Greece which agrees with the time you are going as good. We are thinking about going the 2nd and 3rd weeks of October to the Islands and possibly mainland some. Would love to hear your plans and suggestions on itineraries. It will also be 3 couples with 5 out of the 6 never having teamed to Greece with similar interests also - early 60s.

The latest i have been to Santorini was the 20th of October.
The days were mostly sunny and dry, the weather was not warm enough for swimming, and the pool of my hotel was not heated, so that swimming in the pool was not possible either.
Many cafes, restaurants were closing down as the island was preparing for the winter sleep.
It was still a very nice time to enjoy the island, just be prepared that you will be there at the end of the season.

Many people prefer travelling in October when the weather is cooler and the islands are very quiet. The later in October, the more risk of autumn storms. There were storms all over the Greek islands in October 2013, but you are unlikely to experience anything like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDkf8p1H2aI
If you wish to have any nightlife at all other than dinner and drinks, stick to the islands that have a longer season, e.g. Santorini, or go to the mainland. Many shops, restaurants, and hotels close at the end of September, especially on islands like Ios and Paros.
I agree with mariha2912 you should plan to spend some time on the mainland, which has all the things you are looking for in October. No worries about autumn storms stopping ferries, less wind on the beaches, and more places open.

We have been to Greece in early October but we were in Chania on Crete and Hydra and although the weather was lovely - warm, not hot - it was definitely the end of the season with restaurants mostly empty and staff standing around looking bored. Towards the end of our time we noticed some restaurants closed for the season.
I'm not saying don't go, just be prepared.
