Hi, we are flying into athens in mid-May for about 4-5 days, then going to rome area for about 5 -6 days. We are mid-50's and haven't been to europe for 30 years. Never been to italy or greece. We will meet 21 year old son in greece then go off on our own to italy, suggestion? we love beaches, history, and not a frenetic pace of traveling. the other possible option is to meet son in spain, he's been studying in seville, then go onto rome, taking greece out of the mix.
greece and italy, where to go?

I am not sure what you want -- you want us to give you a sightseeing guide for 4 days in Athens area? If you have 4-5 days and "not a frenetic pace of traveling", then enjoy your whole time in Athens ... you cannot get to an island and back without spending too much time in travel. Athens has plenty fo history, it's been waiting for you for 4,000 years. If you want a detailed sightseeing agenda, go to Trip Advisor Greece forum and put in the search slot "Athens in 3 days" and a gazillion step by step scenarios will come up. Not going to put one here, because it sounds as if you aren't even that sure about Greece.
If you want to go to a beach it's a lot easier to find a gorgeous one near to Athens than from Rome, the italian beaches are, well, not as clean... In Athens, you can take the "Tram" from Syntagma Square to an excellent beach or 2 on the mainland shore... below Piraeus ... clean sparkling waters, golden sand. Savvy Athenians on another travel forum recommend Asteria Beach at Glyfada. You take the tram from Syntagma Square that has the end destination of Voula (tho u don't go that far). It will take about 50 minues to get to the KOLIMVITIRIO tram Stop. It's about an 8 minute walk, cross Poseidonos Avenue (get it? Poseidon = sea god), and enter the Beach complex... sunbeds, a lovely cafe called Balux.
Here's a Tram Map ... station names re in Greek but look for one startng with KO...

Were I coming from Greece, I think I'd be fascinated to see the areas of Italy that still show signs of having been Greek colonies in antiquity. That is chiefly the area around Naples, Sorrento, the Amalfi coast and Salerno. Pompeii is also in that area.
I suggest you get a guidebook and look to see if that area appeals to you. However, if you like a slower pace, you can't see both this area and Rome in 4-5 days. You'll need to choose between the two.
Sevilla is also a great place. It will already be quite hot there by May.
