Any suggestions from you own experiences would be appreciated.

Not sure why anyone would need a tour company to find Christmas markets; they are everywhere. If you happen to be in the south of France in December be sure to see the Christmas market at Monte Carlo (of all places). Lots of animated displays and artificial snow and temperatures in the 60s. Also for great food stands and a giant Christmas market go to Lyon just outside the Lyon Perrache train station.

Hi Georgiana. I took a DER tour in 96 of the Christmas markets. It included air, hotel in Munich, and day trips around Bavaria and one in Austria. The hotel and guide were fine, but they had too many people booked and if one woman had not fallen on day one and broke her leg, there would not have been enough seats on the bus! But it was good to have someone else drive in the frozen countryside and thru the cities, but it was annoying to have to get back on the bus when one wanted to spend longer somewhere. We did only one market a day, but each trip returned in time for dinner in Munich (with the exception of the Austria visit) so it limited our options on how we would spend the time in each town. I met some nice people and had a good time - loved the markets - but would prefer a tour with smaller groups and maybe staying in different towns. If you search for tours you'll probably find many that can be booked in the US. There was a thread a couple of years ago where someone was looking for a German tour. Don't recall how that turned out but you might want to search here. Have fun whatever you do - the markets are delightful. Drink gluhwein and eat brat!

Thank you for the suggestions. I have sent for brouchures but as you pointed out, none are DE based. I do have a Munich site, and will see if I can locate a "hometown" tour company.

I went to some markets in 2002 on my own - flew into Munich then took the train for a day trip to Nurnburg, then train to Salzburg (stayed overnight). So I saw 3 of them and they are pretty much all the same. I guess I liked Salzburg's best. Taking the train is pretty easy, easier if you can pick a base so you dont' have to schlepp stuff just take day trips.

I hope to see Nuremberg , Rothenberg, and Munich again (love it there) Perhaps the train is the best idea. Had such a great time last year despite the bus tour, if you know what I mean, that I want more.
