My husband and I will be making our first trip to Amsterdam in January and will be there for two nights in January. (Not exactly the tulip season, but we'll be in the area already.)
While we're there, our priority will be on walking, eating and just enjoying the ambience of the city rather than hitting specific museums or sights. The Jordaan neighborhood sounds like it has the charm and ambiance that we like, as well as being pretty central to the train station, which we’ll be arriving and departing from.
We found a houseboat near Noordermarkt that sounds like a fun alternative to a hotel. Before booking, though, I'd love to get your opinions on whether this is a good location. Is it close to the charming part of Jordaan? Is it within walking distance of good restaurants? Are there any watch-outs we should know about?
Thank you for your input!

Amsterdam.info - Farmers Market on the Noordermarkt
Farmers Market on the Noordermarkt is the most trendy of the Amsterdam markets.

Well i could not think of a prettier canal to be one than any of the ones in this area - IMO one of the sweetest possible locations for houseboating. And great location for tourists.
Wonderful! It's always great to hear from someone knowledeable about all of this. Thank you!
I think you will enjoy that area a lot. The heart of Jordaan is probably a little further south but only a couple of blocks or so and the Noodermarket area itself it charming. We walked through there from train station to our BandB and again on the market day.
I'm sold. Thank you!
to me the Joordan area is the prettiest part of a really pretty Amsterdam - at least the canals - they are lined by houseboats so it will be like moving into the neighborhood - now if those church bells don't wake you too early!
We love the Jordaan. We have stayed at www.nadia.nl 2 times.
They are a clean budget friendly hotel located right in the Jordaan. Easy walking to most central sites.
We stayed in a houseboat near the Noodermarkt (booked through Frederic's Rent a Bike) this past June and loved it. A bit of road noise, a little bar noise late in the evening, although not disruptive.
Three days out of four we had either lunch or dinner at nearby Daalder Cafe.
