Good hotel in Zermatt for CHF 300? ($200 US)
Three of us will be traveling to Zermatt for 2 nights (a friday & saturday) and would like a reccomendation for good hotels. We are looking in the 3-4 star range $200-$250 US/night(300-400 CHF). Some of us have bad knees so a long walk would not be desired.
Thanks for any help.
Karl
I stayed at the Hotel Pollux in Zermatt three years ago. It is right on the main drag amongst all the shops, not too far, maybe two blocks, past the train station. I don't know how much it cost, but it was very nice, very clean. Sort of has that stereoytpical 'Alpine' look about it. Lots of wood in the decor. It has a very nice restaurant, too. I was on a tour and I believe they used mostly 3 star and occasionally 4 star hotels.
If you stay there you may want to try to get a room toward the back of the hotel and on the second floor.
Our room was on the street side, and while it was nice to go out on our balcony and see everything going on down in the street, it was noisy late at night. Also, if your room is at the back of the hotel you may be able to glimpse the Matterhorn from your window.
When I recommend a room on the second floor I'm thinking of your trick knees you mentioned. Zermatt is prone to having a power outage for a few hours in the mornings and then, of course, the elevators don't work.
I don't know whether you've been to Zermatt before, again thinking of your knees, anytime you walk anywhere in Zermatt you will always be walking either uphill or downhill. The incline isn't at all steep, but enough that you're always aware of it.
Hope I've helped. Have a nice time!

Just got back from a month in Switzerland - spent 12 days in Zermatt. I can highly recommend the Grand Hotel Shoenegg, a 4-star hotel with fabulous dinners, stunning views of the Matterhorn, and in your price range. It sits on a hillside above the town, so it's quiet. If you call from the train station, they'll send their little electric bus to pick you up. When you want to walk around, their elevator goes all the way down, inside the hill, to a street-level tunnel entrance (feels like the batcave!).

The Monte Rosa is at the upper end of your range. It's very historic going back to the beginnings of mountain climbing in Zermatt. Whymper stayed here, I believe, when making the first (more or less) successful ascent of the Matterhorn.

A Seiler Hotel so you know everything runs well, it's well situated in town. Strong recommendation.

twenj
