Good Family Home base for a month in Italy

We are planning a family trip to Italy for a month, 2 kids will be 10 and 8, and would like to find a great village near water and a good rail line for getaways. Looking for some ideas and suggestions from the community.
Thanks!

Steve-- a bit more info:

when are you going?
one month in one location or are you willing to split it in 2?
Rome: base there and easy reail access out but go to beach as day drip as well?

I'd look for a property with a pool rather than a base town on either coast. You'd be more likely to experience a great village atmosphere and have more interesting and varied getaway options.

If you 'must' be on the water, consider either Lake Bolsena or Lake Trasimeno for access to Tuscany or Umbria. Trasimeno has a couple of rail stations on or near the shore; Terontola is a connecting point for some rail routes in the area. Both lakes have limited ferry service.

I always think of Lucca when people ask about a good long term base with good rail connections. And, some of the best beaches in Italy are an hour away.

Jan - it would be in the summer months, we haven't set a date, still planning a bit.

We were thinking of starting in Rome for several days to a week, then finding a nice base to 'live' and immerse ourselves.

Jean/Bob - great suggestions, thank you!
