Good coastal town other than Sorrento on train line to Pompei??

Looking for a great seaside perch from which to visit Pompei. Have stayed in Sorrento and Naples. Anyone out there know of a great spot (or hotel or b&b) in another town along the way? We probably will not have a car and will need to take the small train-- but don't mind a longish taxi ride to the train station.
Thanks much!

Several years ago, we stopped (but didn't stay overnight) at Vico Equense and thought it was charming. I believe it is a stop on the Circumvesuviana line.

But staying in Castellammare di Stabia (also a Circumvesuviana stop) would put you closer to the Scavi di Stabia and the cable car ride to the top of Monte Faito.

Cali - On vesuviana.it, enter Naples as departure station and Sorrento. Select time of day and a date in the next few dates. You will get several train results. Some travel times will be about 50 minutes while others may be 1:10. Click the i (info) under details. When that appears click on intermediate stops to get the stops list for that particular train. Some of the trains are more express (a few less stops) than others, but not by much.

With a choice of getting to Pompei by bus (CST line, number 4) or Metropolitana train, there's also Vietri sul Mare:
http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/vietri

It's the easternmost place on the Amalfi Coast

Bus details:

... and those for the trains:

(Please do be sure to read the captions for directions to the ruins)

Although in reality they're all used by the same mix of citizens from Naples and other parts of Campania, that would save the nervous from having to take the Circumvesuviana railway?

And, as well as being a change from the Sorrento side of the peninsula, it's also a much handier location if considering a bus or train outing to glorious Paestum.....

or Salerno...

For more, although it's well due for an update (so do crosscheck any times, prices etc - and ignore most of the references to the 'Metro del Mare'), there's a useful 'Travel Directory' that can be downloaded from the official tourism website, here...

...or, directly, here..

And I guess I ought to add a mention of the place that we've found best as a base for visiting Pompei - the coastal city of Ischia, on the little island of the same name, whose charm and beauty more than make up (for us at least) for any extra difficulty in getting there!

Pictures etc....

.... the 8MB PDF of August's bilingual visitor magazine...

.... and the advice I gave one visitor intending to make that daytrip...

thanks all for the help.

a-brit-in-ischia-- that's a really interesting idea-- i would not have thought of staying in ischia. however, we will do almost anything to visit thermal waters so....

how much time are we talking to get in? frequent ferries? let's say we left our hotel at a leisurely 10am. could we be in pompei by 12? do the bus and ferry run late? thanks much for any info.

i will check out other towns listed. was hoping someone would have a favorite little place in a favorite little town in mind...

Hi there!

As Ischia has 3 ports in all, and Naples two, it's going to depend somewhat on where you start from....

But, by hydrofoil, it's between 35/40 minutes from Ischia Porto to Mergellina, to 50/55 minutes from Forio to Beverello.

This route map may help - although their timings may be a little optimistic!
http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/131536118

Services are frequent, but vary slightly with the season. For the main operator's current timetable, see:
http://www.alilauro.it/orari.pdf

This one's for the SITA buses on that Naples/Pompei route, but may change slightly sometime in September:

http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campan...ROVIII_BIS.pdf

............................

Once in Naples, if following that bus suggestion, it's a 10/15 minute walk to the little depot at the Immacolatella, and then a ride of some 35 minutes...

With those SITA buses being roughly hourly (but not running at all on Sundays!), it would help to pick the right hydrofoil - do so and the trip's some 2 hours, otherwise almost three?

We've very rarely had problems with the hydrofoils' timekeeping - and in 10 years have only seen the odd one unable to get its engines started...

On the way back from such trips, we prefer taking the slightly cheaper, but slower, ferries - for a slump, a sunbathe and the better views of the passing scenery.... like this, but in reverse!
