Where is the best place to find golf package deals for St. Andrews and when is the best time to go?

I'm not sure you can find packages that include a round at St. Andrews because, as I understand it, tee times are assigned by lottery. You can throw your name into the hat, but it's the luck of the draw as to whether or not you'll play.

I have friends who've gone in September, when they've found the weather to be decent, and play maybe a little less heavy than during summer months.

beachbum is certainly mistaken. You can get rounds on the Old Course through several tour companies. Celtic Golf is just one. But these tours are usually very expensive and include rounds at places like Gleneagles, Troon, Turnberry, etc staying at high end hotels.

But going on a golf tour is not the only way you can play the Old course. You can save a TON of money doing it on your own. You can apply for tee times as far ahead as possible through the web site www.standrews.org.uk/ it will answer most any question you might have.

Or you can apply for the daily lottery, where you call in the a.m. and in the late afternoon call back to find out if you won a tee time for the next day.

As for when is the "best" time? Totally subjective. Any time is good but the dead of winter is problematic due to weather and very short daylight hours. In general the best times would be May through Sept but earlier or later in the year are OK too.

Be sure to avoid w/i 3 weeks of the Open if it is at St Andrews (July of 2005) or at Carnoustie. Both locations tie up most local accomodations and other nearby courses for qualifying rounds.

As readers have replied, there are tour operators and hotels that have St. Andrews golf packages. But they are very expensive--especially for one round on the Old Course.

For 2005, the Old Course will be closed for the Open from 20 June through 19 July. And there may be other days that local competitions will occupy the course.

Will you be the lone golfer--or is there more? If you are two or more, you can call and request a tee time on the Old (usually a year in advance). If successful, you must play another of the St. Andrews courses (New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum).

You can enter the ballot by calling 01334 466666 before 2pm on the day before (call on Saturday for Monday's ballot). There must be at least two of you to enter the ballot--and the luck of the draw determines if you get a tee time.

Or you can always go down to the starter's shack early in the morning of play (by 5am from June to September). The starters are very helpful and generally will work you off with a group with an opening. And they will tell you approximately when you can expect to tee off. You may have to split up if more than one. But you almost always can get off.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

PS:
Check out http://www.standrews.org.uk/index.htm for further information on the St. Andrews golf courses. And you can e-mail for tee times at [email protected]. And the year or two in advance has been waived--you can request now for a time next year.

May/June is usually a good time as is October. September is usually booked up by the R & A.

Green fees for 2005 are: 115 pounds for the Old---55 for the New---55 for the Jubilee---33 for the Eden---and 22 pounds for the Strathtyrum.

Cheers,
