Going to Munich for work in November!

After sitting like Cinderella in the office while others travel it is now my turn. I will be in Munich for two weeks in mid-November. I will still be expected to work (sigh!) but I am looking for suggestions for sightseeing for evening hours. Also I will have one weekend day free to sightsee so suggestions for that. Any suggestions for restaurants near the Hilton City would be great too!
TIA.

The City Hilton has its own access to the U bahn station below. Hop on the westbound train and get off on the second station to arrive in Marienplatz where you'll find Ratskeller, Dallmeyer, Hofbrauhaus etc. The Viktualienmarkt is just a couple block south.

Munich is a nice strolling city. Unfortunately, the sun sets at about 4:30pm in mid November.

I would imagine that you would have access to churches in the evening. I would recommend a visit to the Asamkirche and nearby Frauenkirche. Asam is rococo: very dark and ornate. Frauen is white and soaring in its interior. Near them both is Augustiner on Dom (restaurant) that we enjoyed. I understand that Andechs on Dom is very nice.

These churches and restaurants are near Marienplatz that DAX has already mentioned.

Regards, Gary

Hotel Preysing: You can look it up on de.yahoo.com. They will give you a map.

The hotel is about 1/2 kilometer from either the Sbahn stop at Rosenheimer Platz or the one at Isartor. The Sbahn's will likewise take you to Marienplatz which appears to be less than 2 kilometers away from your hotel.

The hotel is a over the Isar River, where we liked to take our evening walks, though perhaps not at dark.

Regards, Gary

I've never stayed at Hotel Preysing but the location is definitely not as convenient to use the underground, I would recommend taking the taxi in the evenings since the cost is quite reasonable.
You can possibly use bus #18 from the Gasteig stop but you have to transfer to get to the main attractions, so it's not as practical.

If you are into classical performances, the Gasteig venue is just a block from your hotel. The Deutsches Museum is also still within reasonable walking distance but that's more of a daytime destination.

In one of the evenings, you can take a stroll along the expensive shopping street Maximilianstrasse toward the Residenz, you can eat at the Spatenhaus for a traditional german meal. If you're looking for a fun crowd, stop at the hip BrennerGrill for people watching. It's a huge loud & lively place with stone columns & rustic tables inside the Maximilienhoefe. They serve steaks, grill & pasta, but the bar gives complimentary antipasti if you ask when you order your drink.

If you are a foodie, take a taxi to the famous Munich food institution Kaefer Schaenke (73 Prinzregentenstrasse). It's a high end tourist restaurant, but you can also just stroll inside the rustic gourmet food market below the restaurant which remains open into the evening. The restaurant itself is over commercialized for my taste.

One of my favorite restaurants in Munich is LENBACH (Ottostrasse #6 near Lenbachplatz). This huge trendy lounge restaurant was designed by Sir Terence Conran. Prices are more reasonable and I highly recommend their pasta or fish dishes. The restaurant is so huge that it looks empty but if you are looking for good food, this is the best place in terms of good value/high quality. You can walk south towards the livelier & well lit Karlplatz/Stachus afterward, from there you can walk to Marienplatz via Neuhauserstrasse.

Your new hotel is right next to the stop of tram 18, which will connect to both subways (U-Bahn) or suburban trains (S-Bahn).

It is located in the district of Haidhausen, which has tons of restaurants and cafes in 5-15min walking distance. It is a much more "local" area to go out at night than touristy Marienplatz.
Besides more trendy restaurants, you will also find Hofbräukeller in 5min walking distance at Wiener Platz: very reasonable prices, and typical Bavarian beer hall ambience (minus the tour groups).

Tram 18 will take you from your hotel to Reichenbachplatz in 5 minutes. That area is also a hotspot for evening hours, many restaurants, cafes, bars. The Reichenbachplatz stop is also a good starting point for daytime sight seeing. Viktualienmarkt is just 100 meters away, and Marienplatz/ City Center just another 300 meters.

For your weekend, I would head south to the Alps. There are many gorgeous villages to explore and the most beautiful scenery. Also, I think the people are even friendlier. Possible choices: Berchtesgaden (Hitler said this was the most beautiful place on earth-this would be the only opinion of his I would agree with) and Oberammergau (the site of the Passion Play every 10 years). Those 2 are my favorites, but you could not go wrong anywhere in that region.

If you're interested in museums, Munich has much to offer--including a marvelous science museum with many interactive displays.
