Going to Amsterdam solo and want to have "the rice table experience" - it is possible to do it when you are eating alone?
I am crazy to experience this kind of food, especially at the Kantijil en de Tijger Restaurant, but i am afraid they will serve 14,20 dishes and i will be all alone! ideas anyone? Thanks for helping me solve this delicious dilema.

An alternative is to order Nasi Rames or Nasi Campur, which is a one plate dish with rice and different meats and vegetables. Not as "rich" as rijsttafel, but a good alternative if you are alone. Best is to find a dining partner, which should not be that difficult if you are a nice and sociable person! <BR>

The places I have been in Amsterdam for "rice table" have required ordering for a minimum of 2 people (which would feed four - and no doggie bags!). However, you can order Nasi Rames just for yourself. Rice Table is neat - but best shared with someone because it is a huge amount of food. Some places also have something they call "mini rice table" which is a single plate with a variety of dishes on it. If you are staying in a hostel or hotel you maybe able to meet up with others who would be up for going out to dinner with you.

Agree with Jo. Just got back from Amsterdam and the dollar was very strong. Order the real thing, even if it's for two, but tell your waiters ahead of time if you plan to leave any food--perhaps they can cut the order in half, portion-wise and pack the extra food up for their friends, those in need, or even lucky pets. The experience of looking and nibbling the wide variety of things is part of the thrill. So go for it.
