glencoe - skye - glasgow itinerary questions

Somehow cannot find my last post - am I correct in posting Scotland queries under search topic uk and in europe forum?
anyway our family (2 adults, 2 kids) is flying to Glasgow July 25 (from Canada)
Monday: arrive morning - stay with relatives
Tuesday: head up towards Skye. Overnight in Glencoe at Isles of Glencoe hotel (anyone been there?)
Wednesday: train from Ft. William to Mallaig, ferry to Skye. Overnight near Uig in Java Croft b and b.
Thursday: Skye activities. Second night Java Croft
Friday: more of Skye - need to find place to stay near Broadford or closer to bridge (place with family room)
Saturday: make our way back to Glasgow - any suggestions for route/stops along the way?

Thanks for any advice on our route or for our time in Skye

The search fuction on here is very inadequate. The posts have to be indexed and I saw somewhere a suggestion this had not been done since early May.

However, an easy way to find your own stuff is to click on your name at the top of this post. That will bring into the left hand column all the posts you have contributed to.

I've just done that for you and "topped" them. The traffic on here is such that a post can disppear down the stack very quickly. Any response will bring it to the top again.

There's nothing wrong with the way you're putting stuff in.

The Isles of Glencoe is a fairly soulless glass and concrete job in an astounding location.

Do have a look at our prior comments before you close off your options.

We stayed in Ballachulish Hotel nearby. If The Isles of glencoe is the one I am thinking of (Probably as not there are not many hotels in the area) it is as sheila said but there are lots of activities that the kids would like. My partner and I rented out a kayak for 2 people and went around the area for an hour. Lovely scenery but the hotel reminded me of an older Jurys. More for the kids than adults. It will be fine for 1 night.

yes I don't hold high hopes for Isles of Glencoe being a charming place. Many on this site have warned against Fort William as a tourist trap so I thought the Glencoe area might be more appealing and the hotel will be fun for our children.
I still am having no luck getting a place near Broadford or Kyleakin for our return journey.
Also looking for tips on things to do around Glencoe and routes to take for the journey from Skye back to Glasgow.
Thanks again.

For a place near the bridge(Kyleakin) try The White Heather B&B. It gets great reviews on trip advisor.

Hi

I've stayed at the Isle of Glencoe. Like Sheila says it can be a bit souless. It is very clean, staff are very friendly, food is good, but it is very popular with coach parties of elderly people, which is not in itself a problem, but they do tend to take over the bar area at night and have quizzes and stuff for themselves which makes it hard to find a seat and have a nice relaxing drink!

However the rooms are nice (worth paying for the top deck rooms for the view) and the location is just amazing. I'm a Scot and the view over Loch Leven never fails to leave me gobsmacked, so its worth it if only for that!

I can't speak for kpie, but often when I click on my name, Fodors will bring up my posts as of the day before or even several days before. More recent ones will not show.

If I click on my name, and then hit reload a few times, several versions of my list recent posts will come up.

yep, I thnk maybe when you reclick your name, cached pages come up and not the most recent ones. Sometime you have to go off the internet and back in to get the most recent threads.

As has been mentioned on several threads in the last couple of days -- clicking on your name does work. But there is a glitch and sometimes the very latest threads don't display.

In that case, simply click on your name again - this time on your name at the top of the thread list frame, not on the one at the top of the page . . . .

My family of four just stayed at the Isles of Glencoe in early June 2005. It was a glorious day. The view of Loch Leven was remarkable. We spent our time walking on the trails and soulless it was not. The hotel is good for kids and adults. The food was included in our rate and was outstanding (both dinner and breakfast). Perhaps we enjoyed this place so much as there were no tour groups to be seen. The pool is nice and the play area for children is as well. The rooms were nice but not luxurious. By the way, the Isles of Glencoe was nice enough for the cast of Harry Potter as they stayed at this hotel when they filmed here.

Sheila - yes I found your earlier replies. Thank you so much for your help.
Thanks to everyone else too. I will try the White Heather. I've also heard from the Mo
Dhachaidh bed and breakfast -- don't know if anyone has stayed there.....
Is Kyleakin a nice town to putter about?
How far a drive is Elgol from there?
As far as my earlier post about the Jacobite train it seems we will need to keep the car and have one adult drive as there is no car hire in Mallaig. I'm assuming the earlier advice was if we were doing the return trip on the train. I don't think we have time to do that.
Thanks for the advice to take the train from Glasgow - will do.

Kyleakin isn't the MOST spectacular place in the Western Isles. It would be a wee bit over half an hour's drive to Elgol.

Janis has given you one contact for car hire in Mallaig.

this is another:-

http://www.ukcheapcarhire.com/highla...g-car-hire.htm

and Morar Motors do too. Morar is about 2 miles along the road, and the train stops there.
