Glass beads in Venice?

Anyone know of any shops that sell good quality loose glass beads (but not incredibly expensive) for jewelry making? I am leaving next week for Venice, and would like to find some unusual beads.

I have a friend who goes to Venice frequently and she gets her beads on Murano Island. She remarked that there are a lot of shops that cater to the tourists, and the beads ARE ordinary, but with a little bit of footwork, you can still find lovely beads. I've seen photos of her beads and they are exquisite! It would probably be best to familiarize yourself with the prices of beads before you go, so you have a frame of reference.

You'll find beautiful glass beads in any number of artisanal shops in Venice proper, without having to go out to Murano or other islands to find them. They are everywhere. Compare prices in different shops to get the best value-I found there is quite a difference between shops in San Marco as opposed to Santa Croce or San Polo for essentially the same beads.

I like the beads from Daniel Stevens. He and his Italian wife design and make the beads by hand at S. Marco 3285A, calle delle Carrozze/S.Samuele. Their web site is www.danielmstevens.com.

For best selection in those "foil" beads (or whatever they're called; don't let anyone tell you that's real silver or gold inside) try the Artifex Vitri shop on the Lista di Spagna near the train station. Heading away from the station, it's on the right just before the Ponte delle Guglie at #326.

I would also recommend a small shop in Dorsoduro on the way towards Santa Maria della Salute -- Giorgio Nason, #167. I'm not sure positive that he sells individual beads, but it is possible. His jewelry is fairly modern and amazingly beautiful... and created right there in his shop. =) Good luck! - h.

I really like Daniel Stevens's store, too. Thanks for giving us the website. I have been there several times and have gotten necklaces and pendants for friends and for myself. I will enjoy ordering some from their website since my friends keep asking us to get them some more necklaces next time we go there.
