GIFT SUGGESTIONS FOR ITALIAN RELATIVES?

We have firmed up plans to see my husband's relatives in Italy. Do any of you have suggestions to an appropriate gift to bring them? Something from the US that is easy to pack. Just to give you a better understanding, they live a modest life in a small village.

Hi basketlady, one thing I have found that Italians love is a small book with lots of beautiful pictures of your city (if you live in a well known city) or a book of the state you live in. They enjoy showing the book to friends and neighbors etc. Another present that is always loved, but do not know if it is possible for you to do, is a small photo album of your family over the years.

Others here will suggest something from your area that is hand crafted and that it always nice also.

If you cannot find a book of your area or state some postcards of your area would be fun for them to have. Just as a little "extra" present.

What part of Italy are you traveling to? You must be so excited.

Thank you for the great suggestions! We leave Tues. for 2 weeks starting in Venice/Florence/Sorrento/Rome. My husband's mother is from a small village in Abruzzo. The main city is L'Aquila and the village is Picenze.

Oh basketlady, you will enjoy Abruzzo so much, as well as the cities you will be visiting of course.

Since you are leaving next Tuesday you do not have a lot of time to get a present do you? If you don't work this out before you leave may I suggest that you purchase something in Italy during your travels. One thought would be a glass paperweight in Venice. I would imagine, knowing how people from small villages in the south are, that probably your husbands family has never been to Venice. And Italians are very proud of their products. If there are older ladies they love beautiful hankerchiefs which you could buy in Venice also, try the shops on the Rialto Bridge.

I have dear people in a small village in Molise which is just south of where your husband's family lives. They too live a modest life. I would keep the gift(s) simple but elegant. But not real expensive as that could embaress them. Don't be surprised if they give you a present or two. A crocheted doily for example, something like that.

I hope you will be able to post a trip report after you return home and get settled in. I would love to hear how your visit was. Best wishes to you.

Thank you so much. I will visit the book store and hopefully find something. If not I will make the purchase in Italy. You have set me on the right track and I really appreciate your help!!

I love to buy and bring home picture calendars from Italy. Maybe your relatives would like a picture calendar from the area where you live. The calendars start on different days of the week than US calendars but that makes it part of the fun .

Peanut butter!

Sounds weird, right? I took some along once for myself and everyone who tried it LOVED it and asked me to bring back more on subsequent return trips.

Nothing says US like a PB&J.

Maybe that along with some other typical "american" foods would be nice, too.

Where are you from? If you are from California, take See's Candies. Try to take something from your area.

Have fun & good luck.

Hi, You have to be careful when traveling with peanut butter, apparently it resembles some sort of explosive when viewed thru security. I had my luggage opened and searched and it was because of the peanut butter.
