gift for family in Germany

We will be traveling to Germany at the end of the month to visit my husband's family which he has not seen in 30 years. Since we will be guests in their home for a little over a week we wanted to bring a nice gift from the US. Any suggestions?

What part of the world are you from? You might think about things that are typical of your hometown or state.

I agree that a cook bok is a nice idea.

I live in Germany and am also always fond if I get some U.S. wine. While big names such as Mondavi, Fetzer, Beringer and the occasional Ravenswood Zin can be found in stores here, there are so many nice wineries from other areas than the Napa and Sonoma valleys that really do produce great wines. I especially care for reds such as a Cabernet, Syrah and Zin as almost nothing compares to a German dry white IMHO. Just beware that the bottles are packed and cushioned properly when you bring them.

When German cousins have stayed here, they brought wonderful books about their community. One was done to celebrate their 400th anniversay or such and while out of print it was great to read about the country my great-grandparents came from.

When we went there, we brought books about our state (the town is too small for a book) as well as a picture book of the town the Germans migrated to (Cleveland).

A food giftpack of things from your home region: wine, chocolates, coffee, jam, honey, etc.

>chocolates, coffee
Don't bring those items. You can be sure they won't like it. (Hershey. etc) Red! wine should be I good idea. (If they drink alcohol) Avoid mass market US wines. Not only are they sold for less money in Germany, they also have a reputation of "not so good" quality, compared to cheap Italian or Spanish wines. Keep in mind, Honey might be restricted, your tax free allowance is 2 liters per person afaik.

because i am from Seattle (Washington) those are locally made specialty items (not Hershey!) that I have taken and were a big success with my hostess in Switzerland. sure Swiss wine is fantastic but they thought it was sweet that I hauled along a Savignon Blanc from a local winery for them to sample.
