According to www.sncf.com, the France National Rail site, you can take a train from Gare Montparnasse to Versailles Chantiers. However, I don't know how far that station is from the palace.
The closest station is RER C Versailles-Rive Gauche. To get there from Gare Montparnasse, take metro line 6 (direction Charles de Gaulle Etoile) to Bir-Hakeim. Take the walkway to the Champ de Mars Tour Eiffel RER station. Take RER C (direction Versailles-Rive Gauche) to that stop.

Take the RER as described by the other post. You will have fairly long walk to the palace but is certainly walkable. We saw more tour buses there than we ever expected and the lines were long but moved quickly. Versailles is spectatacular but the town itself is lacking in charm.

Versailles-Chantiers is about 10-15 minutes further by foot than Versailles-RG, even though the leaflet there says 7 minutes. It's a nice walk through a quiet neighborhoood.
If you're starting from Montparnasse, then take the train, as it's a lot faster getting you to Versailles, even if you add the walk. On certain trains, V-C is the very first stop. But if you want to avoid walking as much as possible - which is a valid argument, as you'll be walking all day inside the palace ground - or if you're starting from somewhere else in Paris, then the RER is probably faster.

Montparnasse -> Javel: Bus #88
Javel -> Versailles Rive Gauche: RER C
You pick up the #88 behind the railroad station at a stop named Montparnasse 2-Gare TGV. It deposits you at the Javel stop at the RER station steps. 18 Minutes enroute.
