Getting to Vamos from Chania??
Hi There - I know there are a few of you (travelerjan, etc.) that will definitely know how to answer this question, but I am considering going to Vamos from Chania on Tuesday (I am in Crete now!), but I have a few questions before I finalize my plans...
I don't want to rent a car, so my only options for getting there are a taxi or bus. AND, I need to be back in Chania by no later than 2:45PM to catch my 4:30PM flight back to Athens on the same day (3PM transfer)
With all of this in mind, I looked into the bus schedule and it appears there is only a 7AM (too early) and 11AM bus to Vamos, with a return bus trip departing Vamos at 1:30PM. Do you think this would work or am I cutting it too close?? I don't know how reliable the bus service is in Crete and I really don't want to miss my flight to Athens...I heard the bus to Vamos is about 1 hour.
As for the taxi option, what do you think?? Don't know if it will be too expensive - noone has been able to tell me for sure how much a taxi to Vamos will cost.
Also, 2 other specific questions. How long does it take to "see" Vamos? Is it worth it to head over there just for 1 1/2 - 2 hours?? Also, how long does it take to get there by taxi vs. bus? I think the bus is an hour but it also makes several stops along the way...Assume taxi would be shorter.
Sorry for all of the questions. The concierge here is not all that familiar with Vamos and I know several of you on this board have been there and have experience with the area.
Thanks! Kalispera!

MY suggestion is not based on special knowledge, only common sense. Pick up the telephone and call! If u do not have a phone card, do it at your hotel desk. The number on the website is: 282 502-3251.
You can be totally sure that whoever answers the phone will speak fluent English, will know exactly what the taxi fare would be, would know what things will be open, and what you can do in several hours. You might even be able to have your "transfer" transport (whatever that is) pick you up at Vamos. In that case, you probably can check out of your hotel, take your bag(s) with you to vamos, and stow them securely there... either at the main office, or at one of several guest accommodations they have.
I am sure they will be more than willing to accommodate your needs. Have fun!!

Hi,
We rented a villa in this area. It is not that far from Chania. I think you could make a deal with a taxi driver to Drive you around. After yor see what you want have the taxi drive you to the airport.
Enjoy,
Yipper

Thanks everyone! I did not end up getting to Vamos for fear of missing my flight, but I do appreciate the input.
Travelerjan, for the record - I DID call Vamos Walks and I have enough common sense to do so But, it was a Sunday and noone answered. Also, Monday was a Greek holiday and I believe they might have been closed then as well since noone answered. The timing just did not work out...
Oh well, will hope to see Vamos the next time I am in Crete!
