Getting to Pompeii
Hi all. I will be either in Amalfi or Positano next summer and would like to do the Pompeii at night visit. Does anyone know if this is a regular summer event and any suggestions on how to get there? Is private ride/taxi the best although I imagine pretty expensive?
Thanks

CG - Taxi both ways would be very expensive.
You could go by public transport - the bus to Sorrento stops at META Station - from where you can take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi.
It looks like you'll have to get a taxi back anyway.
Hope this helps ...

I would not recommend taking the SITA bus back at night from Pompeii. The area immediately around Pompeii is fairly seedy. I'd suggest going by bus TO Pompeii, but arranging a taxi to pick you up.
You asked about Amalfi and Positano. There is a world of difference! Amalfi is not nearly as beautiful or charming as Positano. There's many more stores, but to me it felt like a mini-Sorrento.

Hi CG,
We very much liked our week's stay th the Le Sirene Hotel in Praiano, about 6km E of Positano.
See www.lesirene.com
If the Pompeii at night visit is very important, I suggest that you stay in Sorrento. The taxi fare will be much less.

Thanks Ira. I need to disuade them from the pool I think especially with a beach so close and I am sure we will be out of the hotel most of the time.
BTW I was told that Pompeii at night will be open from April to Oct starting 2005
