Getting from Siena to Florence

We are in the beginning phases of planning our trip to Italy for next Oct.We will rent a car for our time in Tuscany.I do not want to drive in Florence. If we base ourselves in Siena can we drive to a bus station just outside of Florence and take a bus into the city? Any help will be appreciated.Thanks.
Karrie

There's a bus station in Florence pretty much opposite the train station, where you can hop a bus to Siena easily. It's been a decade since I did this, but I remember it was very easy and very cheap. I hope it's still the same today.

I would recommend driving to the Piazzale Michaelangelo which is on the Siena side of Florence. There is a very large, free carpark there where you can leave your car all day. You can walk down into Florence and take a taxi back up at the end of the day when you are tired. It is quite convenient, not to mention having one of the best overall views of Florence.

Hi Karrie,
I planning my trip for about the same time. You might find it more convenient to take the bus from Siena (Piazza San Domenico) to Florence (Central train station). The fare is about 6E.

From my notes

Take SITA bus No 350 next to SMN Station in Florence.

schedules can be found at http://www.sita-on-line.it/index2ing.htm

The bus to and fro Siena Florence is called Sita or TR.a.i.n, they run during working hours even 3 per hour and it takes 65 min. Be sure you get the one called Siena Rapida.

Carrie:

I am planning a similar trip in April and am wondering how are you getting to Siena in the first place? I would imagine if you are coming from the states that you are flying into Florence or Pisa , so are you renting a car to get to siena or do you have someone picking you up or what?? Thanks.

Do not, repeat do not take the local!

We took it instead of the Siena Rapida because it came 20 minutes earlier. what a mistake we stopped at evry haml;et and chicken coop between Siena and Florence. Bus fumes and too much wine is not a good mixture...we thought we were never going to get there!

A lesson learned the hard way!

US
