Getting from Positano to Tuscany..questions about transportation!
Staying in Positano and will be taking the train to pick up rental car in Chiusi and then driving to Montalcino. If I decide I don't want to pay for a private transfer:
What's the best/easiest way to get to Chiusi...train from Salerno to Chiusi, how to get to Salerno?
Bus to Naples train station and train from there?
I also have to be concerned about my arrival time in Chiusi as the rental office is closed
in the afternoon. Gotta love Italians! There are trains which arrive at 2:09 and 4:09. Not sure which location the rental will be in Chiusi...one is closed until 3/the other till 3:30. I would prefer the train arriving at 2 to give us more time driving to Montalcino. Is that too early to arrive...are the car rentals always closed? Anyone know the driving time from Chiusi?
Would very much appreciate thoughts on this. Thanks everyone.

Your rental office is very likely to be closed from noon until four pm.
How much luggage do you have? It might make sense for you to pick up your rent car in Salerno and drive straight to Montalcino. You will be paying for that day's rental anyway. Why not get it in the morning and make some use of it? The cost of gas will be probably be less than the cost of train tickets, plus you won't be dragging your luggage through train stations and waiting for connections. You can even have a nice lunch on the way and not worry about whether the rental office is open or shut.

Driving is something to consider...even though I can feel a case of the nerves coming on. I was extremely nervous (not sure why so don't ask) on our last car rental drive. Like the idea of not worrying about when we get to Chiusi and the independence...however... the train would be more relaxing. Does anyone know how this drive would be? Would Salerno be the best place to pick up the rental? Once again...thanks!!!

Well, it's your vacation. Why do something that makes you nervous for 5 hours?
Have you looked into renting a car in Orvieto or elsewere to eliminate the problems of arriving at an inconvenient time in Chiusi? You can use Mappy.com to plug in driving times to Montalcino from various locations. Viterbo? Grossetto?
By the way, I've heard Chiusi is an overlooked town. If there is a left luggage facility at the station, you can do a little touristing if the rental office isn't open.
