getting around Turkey

Have 10 days or so to tour Turkey. Is there a reasonable way to hit Istanbul & Cappadocia & Fethiye. Prefer renting car. If distances are too great, could I fly from Istanbul to a regional airport & then rent car, perhaps even leaving it at another regional airport when flying back to Istanbul? thanks yujin

We flew from Istanbul to Kayseri, about an hour from the tourist sites in Cappadocia, drove to Antalya where we returned the car and flew back to Istanbul. Turkish Airlines has a monopoly on intercountry flights, I was able to book for $85 USD each way by using a local travel agent in Cappadocia. You could also get approximately those fares at the airport upon arrival if the flights are not booked or with a travel agent in Istanbul.

I don't think the rental car companies had booths at the Kayseri ariport so you might want to rent in advance. I found the best deal at Budget, AutoEurope wasn't too much more. The rental agencies are in downtown Kayseri, a rep from Budget picked us up at the airport.

Thanks Kris, very useful information. How much time did you allot for your travel beyond Istanbul?

We had been to Istanbul before so we allocated 3 days to Istanbul, 2 days to Cappadocia, 1 day to drive between Cappadocia and Side with a stop in Konya, 2 days in Side. We had 10 total days, 2 taken up by flights.

If I had more time, I would have spent one more day in Cappadocia and one more day near Antalya. Even if you get the early flight from Istanbul to Kayseri, it will still be around lunch time by the time you pick up the rental car and drive to Cappadocia so the first day is already 1/2 gone. Alternatively, you might be able to arrange for airport pickup, get to Cappadocia and then rent a car there if you decide not to tour with a guide, which I would highly recommend as we had a wonderful tour.

But if it's your first visit, you might want one more day in Istanbul. We have not been to Fethiye so I can't help you with that.

Hi Yujin,
As Kris suggested, better to fly Cappadocia. 2 days istanbul on arrival,
3 days Cappadocia and 3 days Fethiye and Fly back to Ýstanbul from Dalaman airport will give you another day in istanbul before flying back home.

I live in Cappadocia and believe me 3 days here will be just to enjoy...
