Germany in December 2015
Planning a trip to Germany for 2 weeks beginning of December 2015 together with my wife. What do you think about these bases: 5 nights Munich > 5 nights Freiburg (Black Forest) > 5 nights Frankfurt. Obviously I will take day trips from those bases then.

Where do you want to day trip from Freiburg? Basel, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg? Or...?
I like Freiburg -- it's only an hour from where we live -- but I don't really see it as a base worth 5 nights. Do you have alternatives in mind?
We just got back from a nearly two-week trip to Germany and had a five-night base in Dresden (we also had overnight stays in Leipzig, Baden-Baden and Berlin). We enjoyed Dresden very much -- IMO, the Christmas market is one of the best. Not the biggest, not the most crowded, but one of the best of the city markets. The city itself has plenty to see and it's an excellent base for day tripping to Leipzig, Meissen, Gorlitz, even Prague. We stayed in an aparthotel overlooking the famous Frauenkirche. It was very moderately priced (about 110 euros per night) and it was nice to have room to spread out and to have a washing machine in the unit so we could do a couple of small loads of laundry -- a good perk for people who pack light or want room in their suitcases for souvenirs.

In terms of Munich it might depend on where else you want to go and how much IN Munich you want to see.
In fact, it might be more helpful if you TOLD US what "other" places you want to visit.
The poster above is suggesting a base in Dresden which would not, obviously, work for places closer to Munich so help us help you here.

Gengenbach is a gorgeous old-world walled town and a great base for seeing the Black Forest:

It's right on the scenic BF railway line that heads into the central Black Forest.

Day trips from Gengenbach to Freiburg and to Strasbourg are also feasible by train.
The KONUS program gives you free train trips in the Black Forest region to all these places and as far as the French border: http://www.dreisamtal.de/en/service/konus.php?lang=en
(If you stay in Freiburg, the KONUS card is unavailable to you - you must stay in one of the participating smaller towns like Gengenbach.)

I'm still planning an I'm a bit confused. As would like to visit the Bavarian and Black Forest region, but don't want to move from place to place every day. May be stick to 3 bases and do day trips from there. We like attractions such as museums, old towns, scenery and mountains, but not skiing.

Munich should be stimulating. Freiburg might not have enough to hold your interest that long, and keep it mind it is going to be DARK a lot - - semi-bright from maybe 9am till 4pm unless the sun is skirting along under 3-story buildings, and if the clouds are heavy then it is pretty much dark all day long. If it were me, I would concentrate on interesting, lively towns - - scenery could be a complete wash out depending on cloud cover, though sunny days should be really pretty for those limited hours of daylight. Instead of Frankfurt, maybe consider staying in pretty places like Marburg, Limburg, and other little gems?

Will you have a car? It makes a difference.
We have been in Germany many times. We usually spend our last night in Heidelberg as it is an easy drive to the Frankfurt airport. It beats staying at some airport hotel on your last evening and seeing nothing.
I would head to Garmisch instead of Munich. Base yourself there. Visit the castles and the Christmas markets. Munich is an easy drive depending on road conditions.
Berchtesgaden is also good base. Plenty to see there and neighboring Salzburg. Again, easy car or train into Munich.
