Germany 7 nights to fill in. Please help
We have 7 nights to "fill in" before we reach Munich.
Prior to those 7 nights we are spending 5 nights in the Black Forest area and then 7 in the Mosel area.
This is what we are considering doing:
2 nights in Bacharach - would like to do a boat trip on the Rhine for a few hours and see some of the Rhine towns, maybe.
Would also like to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber maybe 2 nights?
Questions:
Should we add a night in Bamburg or Wurzburg
Add a night after Rothenburg before reaching Munich? If so where?
We will have a car so transport is easy.
Any suggestions please.

After 7 in the Mosel, I think 2 more on the Rhine out of the 5 you have left, might be "over-rivering" it a bit hehehe.
Rothenburg for 2 is a great idea, and Bamberg is absolutely worth another 2. That leaves an odd night so here is a suggestion.
Travel from the Mosel (Cochem?) to Wurzburg (2:30 hours) and spend the better part of the day in Wurzburg, moving on to Bamberg (1:00 hour) in late afternoon/early evening.
Stay 3 nights in Bamberg, which is really now only 2 full days since you arrive late on the first night. You could comfortably spend 2 days in Bamberg proper or day trip one of them to Coburg (38 mins), Bayreuth (50 mins), or Nurnberg (50 mins).
Drive to Rothenburg (1:30 hours) on the third morning stopping in either Iphofen or Bad Windsheim (or Nurnberg if you didn't end up day tripping it from Bamberg. Spend 2 nights in Rothenburg - take a day trip to Dinkelsbuehl if desired (40 mins).
Drive straight to Munich on the last day (2:30).
So, it looks like this;
Bamberg 3 (get to see Wurzburg and Coburg, Bayreuth, or Nurnberg)
Rothenburg 2 (get to see Iphofen and/or Bad Windsheim, and/or Nurnberg, and DInkelsbuehl)

For the boat ride on the Rhein, you best park the car in one "bookend location", take the local train to the other "bookend" and return to the starting location by boat. Usually I recommend Koblenz, train to Bacharch and then the boat downriver (goes a bit faster) back to Koblenz. But there is no major reason why you can't reverse the trip.
Wuerzburg vs. Bamberg? That's sort of toss-up. I like Wuerzburg bcause I was born there, so I know it well. There is much to see and do- - - - the castle Festung Marienberg, the Residenz palace in town and - often overlooked by tourists - the delightful small palace in nearby Veitshoechheim. There are many good restaurants and wine bistros in town. For example the Ratskeller in the basement of the city hall, the Buerger Spital and the Julius Spital (they are not hospitals, but foundations that have their own vinyards). I usually stay at the Best Wester Rebstock, a very nice hotel within easy walking distance to places.BW are much more upscale in Europe than in the US. You then can take the road B-13 south-east along the Main river as far as Ochsenfurt (worth a stop) and on to the Autobahn A-7, which takes you to Rothenburg. While there, or on your way to Munich, stop also in Dinkelsbuehl, I prefer it to Rothenburg.
A suggestion: On your way from Bacharach to Wzbg. you most likely take the A-3 autobahn. It is a good way to by-pass Frankfurt, but as it goes over the Spessart region is subject to traffic jams. Instead, on thbe A-3, get off at Exit 57 (Stockstadt) and take the B-469 south to the Miltenberg turnoff (about 37km from the autobahn). Miltenberg is a delightful town with castle, square and old timbered houses, situated along the Main river. After M, take the road along the river to Wertheim. There look for the signs to the Autobahn A-3 and Wuerbzurg.
Get again off the A-3 at exit 67, and take the scenic road B-8 into tWzbg.
The Romantic Highway (Romantische Strasse) starts in Wertheim, but it really isn't worth taking it from there.
From Rothenburg you are in 2 1/2 hrs Autobahn driving in Fuessen, if that is on you itinerary. If from Munich you plan to visit Garmisch or Mittenwald, that is then a direct shot Fuessen is a bit more in "right field".

I like the look of Bacharach but maybe its a day trip from Cochem or just a one night stay to do the the river trip. How long would a river trip from Koblenz to Bacharach take?.
I like the look of Wuerzburg or Bamberg for a night or 2, the suggested towns and sites to visit are very helpful. Its often hard to piece it all together.
I have been very busy looking up the towns and villages. I love quaint towns to explore.
Dinkelsbuehl is definitely on the radar.

I may be adding an extra night to Munich as we would like to add a visit to Berchtesgaden and Eagles nest.
Its definitely like a jigsaw
