Genoa Accommadations

We're flying US to London to Genova for spring break with our kids. Plan to rent a car in Genoa and drive to Tuscany, but will want to stay in Genoa region for at least a day to recover from the flights. Any suggestions?

I've never been to Genoa, so no personal suggestions for that city. If you aren't landing in Genoa too late (as in before it gets dark), perhaps a drive to one of the more scenic & smaller towns on the coast would be a nice spot to rest & recover from jet lag. Portofino? Portovenere?

Unless you want to tour the historic district of Genova on foot, I recommend driving (or taking the train) to Rapallo or Santa Margherita Ligure for your one-day rest.

Phil, If you want a beach resort town then Santa Margherita is your place. If you want a a quaint fishing village with great scenery then go to the village of Portovenere on the Gulf of La Spezia. You can boat up the coat from there to see the Cinque Terre.

Bob: As between Rapallo and S.M. Ligure, do you have a preference, and if so why?

How about the youth hostel? I thought it was probably the most comfortable hostel in all of Italy, with fantastic, cheap food! Pesto pasta, native to Genoa, was great there. Plus, you don't want to skip a tour of Genoa's decaying palazzos. Gorgeous!

StarHotel President in Genoa. This hotel is more like an American business hotel, nice and clean and you would feel comfortable there. They have a fine aquarium in Genoa you might want to go see. Portofino is not very far to drive and you could try the Hotel Nazionale or Piccolo. Portofino would be a charming spot to just relax for a day.
