Gatwick to Kensington?

Darn this site - it has "eaten" my answer twice. But I'll try one last time . . . .

The Tube does not go to Gatwick, which is about 30 milles outside of London.

the chepest way would be a bus to Victoria coach station, walk 2 blocks to the tube and then the tube to Kensington.

But the bus is very slow because of the traffic inn south London. The best way if you can spend a little more is a train directly from the Gatwick terminal to Victoria train/tube station and then the tube or London bus to Kensington. What street are you trying to get to -- it makes a difference which tube line(s) or bus route you'd want to take.

Anyway -- that hotel/street are right next door to the High Street Kensington tube station. Couldn't be easier.

Just get on the west bound Circle line at Victoria tube station (downstairs from the train station) and get off at High Street Kensington. You will be just yards from your hotel.

When you come out of the High Street Kensington tube station, turn left and Wrights Lane is the first street. Or you can cut through the Boots store (when you don't have luggage) and you'll come right out on Wrights Lane.

We stay just a bit further down the high street on Allen Street. Nice area - lots of shops.

The most convenient way from gatwick is to take the gatwick express to victoria station, then from victoria take the circle line to high street kensington.

The gatwick express is about 20 pds roundtrip and then depending on whether you get a tube pass or day pass at victoria station.

I found using the gatwick or heathrow express the most convenient and quickest way into london central from the airports.

If you're concerned about money, DO NOT take the Gatwick Express.

The trains operated by Southern Railway start and terminate at the same place, take about 10 mins longer and save a few pounds over the Gatwick Express: currently the single journey is £8, plus the tube cost from Victoria.

Incidentally. Southern also operates trains from Gatwick directly to Kensington Olympia. Do not be tempted to take these trains: Kensington is a relatively large borough, and its Olympia station is a long, and very inconvenient, way from Wrights Lane.

I personally do not think saving 2 pds a big deal, but if you do, then flanneruk is right, the regular train is cheaper, but there is a tradeoff. using gatwick express to victoria you get there quickly with no stops. use the regular train and that is not the case. flannersuk is incorrect in time, the difference is much greater than 10 minutes.

as tired as I was getting into london, I appreciated the speed in which the express got me to victoria. from there a single journay ticket got me from victoria to my station. i actually had a 7 day london travelcard but I didn't want to start using it until the next day.

from the time I picked up my luggage to the minute I walked into my hotel, we spent about 45 minutes. I loved this considering it took us almost 2 hours by car the last time we went to london.

On our return trip, we had already bought the return for the gatwick express so we decided to splurge for a taxi to victoria. (we had twice the amount of luggage, a result of very sucessful shopping).

bottom line, cho,eapest is via regular train to victoria, then circle line to hs kensington.

most convienent,imho, is gatwick express to victoria.

The difference in time between the Gatwick Express and the normal Southern train averages five minutes. You can check the times on www.nationalrail.co.uk or www.bahn.de. Both run every 15 minutes, so there really is little reason to choose the Gatwick Express.

I'd just take the regular train. But then I watch my money - or try to. When you get to Victoria station find your way to the stairs down to the tube and take the appropriate line to Kennsington. (Don't remember which line it is, but I'm sure you're have a tube map and it is posted on the wall.)

There are actually a handful of direct trains from Gatwick Airport to Kensington Olympia on weekdays. The service is operated by Network SouthCentral Trains and runs via East Croydon, Clapham Junction and West Brompton en route to Watford Junction. The Train is normally a four carriage train, is rarely busy,it avoids going through Victoria or Kings Cross Mainline Stations In Central London and is accessable if u have heavy luggage.
Like I stated earlier these trains are very infrequent and if you are unable to get one of these trains then the advice in previous messages is pretty sound.
