Gatwick to Buckfastleigh, not an easy solution!
My husband and I will be in London when our son arrives at Gatwick. The three of us are to travel that day to Buckfastleigh in Devon. First we were going to take a train to Exeter then rent a car but this is turning out to be very expensive and tricky. When we arrive everything will be closed as in when we leave (rental places). Is there a place to rent a car near Gatwick where we could all easily meet up then drive to Buckfastleigh? As it is now our son will have to travel (we don't know how) from Gatwick to Paddington then by train to Exeter, etc. Need help!!! Thanks.

I don't understand your question. Is there a place near Gatwick you can hire a car and meet each other? Well, there's Gatwick airport for starters.
There's obviously some reason you've dismissed this.
Or your son might try getting the bus to Heathrow. Or he might get the train from Gatwick to Reading.
Whatever you do, don't waste energy getting from Gatwick to Paddington. It's messy, and all he's doing is getting the train that then stops at Reading - which has frequent direct trains from Gatwick.

You are better off meeting up at Gatwick as there are a number of companies who rent out cars there.
Try Avis, Enterprise or Hertz. Then you can drive together to Devon along the M4 then M5 and A38. For directions from Gatwick to Buckfastleigh try mapquest.com. It will certainly work out cheaper for you to rent a car from Gatwick than to all travel by train. Also you should get there in a fraction of the time.
Best of luck.

Mmn I see your point!
However if you try and get an automatic for a start (if your used to one) it may help as driving a'stick shift' (or manual as it is known here) could be quite daunting.
We had the same reservations when driving an automatic in the USA for the first time. You dont mention what time you are likely to be driving. If it is the middle of the afternoon or morning or on a weekend you may be OK. The golden rule is to drive around the car park until youve got the feel of the car then take it slow. Stay in the inside lane (on the left) and check out the route thoroughly before you drive off. Once youve got onto the M4 it shouldnt be too bad as its motorway all the way and the A38 isnt too busy at this time of year. The M4 is well signposted, just make sure you know what direction you are to be travelling in down it.
If you need any further info please dont hesitate to e-mail me on [email protected].
Best of luck
