Garmisch Partenkirchen : Help pick a guest house/pension

I retrieved this link from a previous thread and would need help picking a guest house / pension. This is for a 2N stay around Christmas. Swandav , you have been kind enough to have given me a couple of leads.Would need your help to rate these guest houses/pensions,based on proximity to main attractions and other pros and cons.

thank you

Hi inquest,

I am very happy to help, of course!

However, there are 21 guest houses on the link -- do you really want me to locate each one and write a reiew of each?

Why don't you look at them and prioritize your favorite 4 or 5? I'd be happier to do 4 or 5.. .

Hi again,

Well, you see, I don't know them -- they are tucked away in small corners of town; when I walk, I just walk from my home to the center, or to the grocery store, etc. I don't know all corners of this town. And there are probably a hundred of these guest houses. I've only lived here for 6 years; I wasn't born & raised here.

I looked all of them up to get the addresses of each (my computer is in the shop, so I had to do it on my tablet . . . ). You could easily have gotten the addresses and checked at google maps -- which is what I did.

Most of them are in Partenkirchen. Which is fine. But the Partenkirchen Christmas market is shorter than the Garmisch market (I believe it is weekends only), and to get to the train station or to the Garmisch market, it would entail a 30-45 minute walk or a bus ride.

These are in Garmisch, according to the information they have posted: Pfeuffer, Mauer, Alpengluehen, Joergl, Hohe Tanner, and Neuner (when I went to the Neuner website, I got directed to Hotel Staudacherhof).

I couldn't get the address for the Sissi, but others on this board have stayed there, and I've heard good reviews about it.

Of those in Garmisch, the Alpengluehen is on a major road, so it may be noisy. And the street in front will probably be bumper to bumper as skiers head to the slopes. The Hohe Tanner is in a wonderful area that I know well, in the oldest part of town. However, it's not very central; it would be maybe a 15 minute walk to the Marienplatz. The Neuner/Staudacherhof is also not exactly central.

You may want to locate each of these yourself to see just how close each is to a bus stop or to the Marienplatz.

If it were me, I'd probably go with Joergl. I like its location the best!

Swandav, thanks a ton for taking time off for me.Though I did look up the google map,it was very confusing.I couldn't comprehend distances, pinpointing areas and roads on the map was difficult.
Your observation about location and the invaluable information cleared all doubts.Garmisch is where I want to look.I'll take a pick from one you have listed. Will start talking to them.

Is this the Joerg you are refering to

Will they rent for two nights? I have a few favorites but they book fast for the ski season. How many people are in your group?

Yes, that's true -- it's hard to know what exactly is "central" in a foreign town. For your (and anyone's) future searches, anything around Marienplatz or the pedestrian street am Kurpark is central.

Yes, that's the one that's listed as "Joergle" on the link you posted. Not sure why the website has a different name.

Let us know what you find!

Don't forget that you can always search by dates and number of persons at the central tourist site

www.gapa.de

That site also shows a symbol (dot inside a circle) to show which ones are central -- but you do need to verify the addresses because I've seen some doozies noted as "central."

We stayed here last year and loved it - http://www.alpenkranz.net/en/

Not far from train station and easy to walk to everything. It's on a quiet street and we would stay here again!

How wonderful they all are! I don't remember the name of the place we stayed I just remember the Zugspitze view and the marvelous bed with feather mattress, feather pillows and feather comforter! Not for everyone, but we LOVED it! Just had to post to say, I'm jealous!

Looking to buy a traditional Alpine Bavarian Hat with pins ( I love hats )and the Haferlschuhe.Any outlet in Garmisch or would Munich be a better place to shop.

Looking forward to my holiday. In the meanwhile trying to tie up loose ends, and make it as seamless as possible.

That looks like a nice place, inquest; the rooms look beautiful and cozy. It is in Partenkirchen, but only by 1 block. You can walk down Angerstrass to Enzianstrasse & Chamonixstrasse and be in the Garmisch pedestrian zone in about 10 minutes. The nearest bus stop is at the train station.

I've only seen those Bavarian hats in the tourist shops. There is a large shop with hats, suitcases, & jackets right on the pedestrian path in Garmisch. I forget its name right now, but I'll cycle past it today and will note its name & address. There is another one in Partenkirchen, right on Ludwigstrasse (the pedestrian street in Partenkirchen). There is a third one on Ludwigstrasse (before it bends right to become the pedestrian path) just past the Rathaus. Probably the one past the Rathaus will be the closest to you.

Have a good trip!

Hi again,

The shop I was thinking of in Garmisch is at Am Kurpark 17, across from the Tchibo shop. You'll recognize it from all the scarves, hats, and suitcases outside the door. It is called Brand Mode -- but you can barely see that painted on the window because of all the hats, etc, in front of it.

Anyway, have a fun trip!

Hi inquest -
I hope you enjoy the Alpenkranz. Heidi was a wonderful hostess. The location was just perfect for us, as we didn't have a car, but the bus stop and train station were close by. The guesthouse is on a quiet street though, so we never had a problem with noise. We enjoyed sitting on our balcony in the evenings, with the view of the Zugspitze and the small river (not sure the name) in front of us. With a glass of wine and a beer, we were happy

You can click on my name for my trip report from last year - for what we did and where we ate in G-P. It is a beautiful place - you will have a great time!
