Garmisch-Partenkirchen accomodations

We are looking for budget accomodations - less than 80 Euro per night for 2 - in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for next September 2013. We will not have a car, so something near a bus stop or the train station would be preferred. We like b&bs or guesthouses with breakfast included.

swandav -I'm hoping you see this too!

Thanks!

Garmisch & its neighbor Partenkirken is tiny - no problem being near the bus and train station (same place). Garmisch is closest to them, however.
I think I stayed at a small place called the Bavaria in 2002 - cute place, not very expensive, Bavarian furniture, lovely watercolors of the area done by the owners. At the time dinner was included as well as breakfast.

Hi swisschocolate,

Yes, I also like Hotel Bavaria and recommend it often. I've never stayed there, but I like its location just between the train station and the pedestrian zone, and I like its decor. Its website advertises its double rooms at 94 Euro per night for September, so it may be too much for you. But you may get a better rate if you email them directly. Website at

http://www.hotel-bavaria-garmisch.co...partenkirchen/

There is also the Hotel Roter Hahn, which is just across the street from the train station and just a few steps from the pedestrian zone. The rates are 44 Euro per person per night (if you stay at least three nights). Website at:

http://www.hotel-roter-hahn.com/garm...enkirchen.html

I've also heard good things about the Guesthouse Sissi, which is in a good location. Its rooms are 40-60 Euro per person, per night:

http://www.haus-sissi.de/willkommen.html?L=6

You could also look at the Hotel Drei Mohren and the Gasthof Frauendorfer in Partenkirchen, but their prices are also in the 40-50 Euro per person per night range -- and you'd need to take a bus or walk about 15-20 minutes to get to the train station.

If you are staying for a week, you could consider doing what so many Germans do -- take a vacation apartment (Ferienwohnung). These days, you can even find an apartment for less than a week. You'll get a lot more room at a lower price, with the drawback that you'll have to make your own breakfast.

You can search for hotels or apartments at the central Garmisch website

www.gapa.de

If you come up with a short list, we'll be glad to give you some feedback!

Thank you both for your prompt replies!

We are staying for at least a week, but I REALLY love those German breakfasts! I know I would miss that staying in an apartment...I suppose I could buy my own broetchen.

Here are some places I found online - swandav, if you know anything about these..?

http://www.hotel-maier.com/englisch/index_engl.html

http://www.gaestehaus-zufriedenheit.de/g_haus.html

http://www.gaestehaus-sonnenschein.de/english/index.php

Thank you so much for your help!!

Hi again,

All of these places are in Partenkirchen, so you'll be using the bus practically every day to get to the bahnhof, or walking for about 15 minutes.

The Hotel Maier is on the main street in Partenkirchen, so you're likely to get a lot of noise from the street.

The Gaesthaus Zufriedenheit may be marginally closest to the train station, but it's pretty far from the pedestrian zone in Garmisch. It also looks the most charming to me.

The Sonnenschein is also quite far away, but in a quiet spot in Partenkirchen, and it's the closest to the train station

Sorry; I'm fighting with my eepad. eeeeee! Posted before I was done.

The Sonnenschein is closest to the Garmisch pedestrian zone but not necessarily to the train station.

I suggest you get the address for all of them and spot them on google maps, and see where they are in relation to the train station and the Garmisch ped. zone.

Partenkirchen does have its own pedestrian zone, but it's not as long and doesn't have as many restaurants/shops.

Anyway, good hunting!

Thanks again swandav - I'll do that. Even if they aren't close to the train station, if there's a bus stop nearby, that would work. I can always email them too and ask that question.

I might be back with more inquiries!

Hi again,

There are two main routes for the busses in town; the busses 1 & 2 (identical routes except for at one end) run through most of the town. Well, here's a link to the map of the routes:

http://www.gemeindewerke-garmisch-pa...d=36&Itemid=39

click on the little "ortsplan" to enlarge it.

The Gaesthaus Zufriedenheit is about a 5-minute walk from the Badgasse stop (I used to live on nearby Schörnstrasse).

The Sonnenschein, unfortunately, isn't close to any of the bus stops -- it sits sort of in a dead zone in the triangle between the routes 1 & 2 and 3, 4, &5. But it is a quick walk to the pedestrian zone in Garmisch, as its website says, 10 minutes. But it'll be a long-ish walk to get to the train station. I would take a taxi upan arrival.

The Maier is just a few steps from the Sebastianskirche stop, but, again, it's on a main road.

Good luck!!

Hi Swisschocolate,
We've been going to Garmisch at least once a year for too many years to mention (don't want to give away our age). For the last several years we have rented from Frau Hausler at
http://www.ferienwohnungen-hausler.d...h/partnach.htm
We usually travel with another couple and each of us has an apartment with plenty of privacy and "elbow room".

It is extremely reasonable - we are paying 56 EU per night this coming January for the Partnach Apt. Extremely conveniently located just off Marienplatz - a couple minutes walk to two free bus stops. Spotlessly clean. Owners are very helpful. Very short walk to conditorei for morning rolls, etc. There are several restaurants nearby where you can have bkfst if you don't want to do your own. Only shortcoming for us is no wi-fi, but there is an internet cafe nearby. Maybe they will have added wi-fi by now - we hope!

Will post again after our upcoming stay to report on any changes.

Enjoy that beautiful part of the world.

Hi again,

Yes, I think you may want to think again about renting an apartment. Even though it's a bit more work to make your own German breakfast, it's still available to you.

The grocery stores sell beautiful ham and cheese already sliced and packaged, ready for breakfast. You can buy small pots of jams and jellies and honey, and of course buy a big block of creamy German butter and rich German coffee. And you can buy a few varieties of cereal, too.

Then, send someone out to buy a variety of fresh breads from a local boulangerie while someone lays out the table. Voila!

You may also find that you adore shopping in German grocery stores -- seeing all that's available and mingling with real locals. Before I moved here, that has one of the highlights of any trip.

If you find an apartment, we'll be happy to point you to some grocery stores that are nearby (and your hosts will be happy to do that, too).

Hope you're having good luck in your search!

Thanks mrtw for the recommendation. I am currently looking at apartments now too. A bakery nearby would definitely help! And Wifi would be great too.

Hi swandav - yes, we've been to Germany, Switzerland and Austria many times and I love going in the grocery stores! I think we could do fine with buying some things for the apartment - I'm considering that but also wanted your input on these other places.

http://www.xn--gstehaus-maria-5hb.de/index.html

http://www.gaestehaus-maria-anna.de/section2.html

http://haus-biehler.de/

http://www.haus-utzschneider.de/

http://www.baerbele.de/frameset.html

Sorry to be such a bother on these but it helps to have someone there in town! Like I said, I'm still open to apartments - just exploring all the options. Guess it's a good thing I am planning so far in advance.

Thanks again!

Hi again,

So so sorry I didn't see your last question!

All of these places look lovely, but only one of them is really centrally located.

Gästhaus Maria and Gästhaus Maria Anna are both on Zoeppritzstrasse, and I really wouldn't say it's a quick walk to the pedestrian zone. It would be maybe 15 minutes. Getting to the train station will be 10 minutes farther.

The Biehler is on Sonnenbergstrasse, which is at the far end of Partenkirchen (a friend of mine lives off of that same street). The nearest bus stop will be about 5-7 minute's walk. Walking to the train station will take about 40 minutes or longer, to the Garmisch pedestrian zone about the same amount of time.

The Haus Utzschneider is also in Partenkirchen, just marginally closer than the Biehler. It'll probably be pretty quick to get to a bus stop (under 5 minutes) and maybe 30 minutes or so to get to the train station.

The Bärbele is the best located, just steps from the train station and maybe 5 minutes from the Garmisch pedestrian zone. However, it doesn't look that charming to me -- maybe I have a preferance for white linens, lol!! But the hosts sure look friendly.

It's a hard choice. Sorry again for my delay. What are your most recent thoughts??

Hi swandav!

I can't say thank you enough for all your help with this. It is so difficult to make a choice!

I also saw the Landhaus Hohe Tannen - it's very close to Maria Anna though. If there was a bus stop close by, I'd be golden. But I didn't see one on the map you sent me.

I am going to keep researching apartments as well. I am keeping a list of those, including the one that mrtw recommended above. If anyone else has stayed in one pretty centrally located near a bakery, I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks again everyone!

Reading all this and seeing the apartments makes me wish I were going! Have you checked TripAdvisor for ratings on these places? Just a thought.

No, there's not really a bus stop nearby. The bus stops are on Zugspitzstrasse, so yo''d have to walk a couple of blocks to cross the river (big stream, really) Loisach and then to get to Zugspitzstr. Depending on where, exactly, the house is on Zoeppritzstr, the nearest stops would be Marienplatz or Am Muhlbach.

Let me just mix things up for you a bit more. These apartments:

http://www.fewo-am-kurpark.de/de/mai...nser-haus.html

lie right in the pedestrian zone at Am Kurpark. It looks like they have studio apartments that are in your price range for Sep (75 and 79 Euro), and they offer a morning bread service (Brötchenservice).

Good luck!

Hi again --

Here's a guest house that's centrally located, but you have to contact them for their prices:

http://gaestehaus-nicole.de/en/

However, the one review notes that the continental breakfast is served in your room, so I'm not sure how complete it would be.

crckwc1- Hi - yes I have been checking that as well.

Thanks swandav - yet more options!

It's not that we mind walking at all - we enjoy that. We just want to make sure we're not so far away from things that it's a hassle. And we usually don't have much luggage - we travel lightly with a carryon. I suppose when we first arrive and when we leave, we could get a taxi to the train station. The time we are there would be fine walking or taking a bus.

The only must have this year is WiFi. My husband will need it to check into work (ugh!) occasionally. But I told him at least he can do that with a beer in his hand ;-).

Hi again,

I walked by this place yesterday evening and thought its location was perfect -- in one of the oldest streets in town and about 3-5 minutes from the pedestrian zone. See if you like it:

http://www.gaestehaus-angela.com/index.htm

The site is only in German, but I use google to translate websites I need to see. They have a German buffet breakfast, and they do have some rooms at 26 Euro and 35 Euro per person per day.

They also have an apartment, and they offer breakfast with it, but it's 90 Euro per day.

Hi swandav -
It does look nice! Price is great and location as well. Only thing I will have to email them about is if they have WiFi.

Thanks so much! I'll keep you posted.

Ok - here's my new short list...opinions or advice?

Gastehaus Angela

Fewo Hausler (no wifi by the way - internet cafe or McDonalds close by)

Gasthaus Sissi

Landhaus Hohe Tannen (I might take this one off list - no bus stops close by - but I love the way it looks!)

Fewo Lissy - drexler-rainer.de

Ferienwohnung-lipf.de

Fewo Harmonie

Thanks again everyone - especially swandav!
