There isn't one color, different cars are different colors, it's not like in the US where some company paints all their cars the same color. This isn't something you have to figure out, all train stations and airports have an official taxi queue where you go to get a taxi. Cars have to wait their turn in the queue, as do people. Any company there is legitimate. Anyone approaching you outside that line is not.
I don't recall where it is and that might depend on where you exit, but there are signs to taxis.

The taxi rank is very recognizable.. it is covered and have railings that form aisle to line up in.
Do not accept or even acknowledge any "taxi" drivers that approach you outside the line.. simpy wait in the line till you are assigned a taxi by a dispatcher.
A price should not be set.. rides are metered. Extra fees can be added on after meter price.. legal add ons are one euro per suitcase in trunk and 3 euros per extra passengers 3rd and subsequent.

okay, I found a map. they are both to the left and right of the front entrance.
there is a taxi point to the left of the front entrance about the intersection of rue de Dunkergue and rue de St Quentin. Exit to the right, it's just around the corner of the gare on rue de Compiegne/rue de Maubeuge. There may be a door over that way, to exit, if so, it's towards the Eurostar lines (sortie de la Cour des Taxis).

This is the definitive way to know that a taxi is legitimate:

There is a brand-new system at Gare du Nord, which aims to avoid both legitimate and scam taxis clogging the streets on all sides of the station. If you want to avoid running the gauntlet of guys trying to tempt you into their cabs, and desperate customers trying to jump in front of you when a cab does pull up - here's what you do:
Look for these signs inside the station: "TAXI Niveau -2" and take the escalator two floors down and get in line there. Doesn't take any longer to exit the station than it does to get out of the jammed-up streets outside.
No matter which method you choose to find a taxi, remember that legitimate taxi drivers always remain inside their cabs, and there is no bargaining for prices.

We took a taxi from Gare du Nord a couple of months ago. If you are arriving by train on one of the main platforms, just walk up the platform into the station, turn right and follow the Taxi signs overhead to the taxi rank just outside the building on the west side. The doors to the outside are just beyond the Eurostar/Thalys platforms. We have used that taxi rank several times over the years. There may be others around the station that I am unaware of, but this one is easy to find and we've always used it.

As Fuzz says taxis stand is being redone.
All knowledge prior to 1 month ago is useless.
I have seen works going on. The roof has been demolished and I didn't see the -2 level yet. Will tell you more in Monday.

If you're on a schedule, I suggest you have a Plan B. The only time I tried to get a taxi at Gare du Nord the line was long and taxis scarce. It was lunchtime and I'd failed to anticipate. Consider the metro and investigate buses, too, if you must be someplace at a particular time.

Thanks so much for all this valuable info. I hate to admit it, but I was scammed last trip and do not want to make that mistake again!! Luckily, I'm not on a schedule so can take my time to find the correct exit.
