Garden Tour

I'm going to be in England for a week the second week in October. I'll be in London for a couple of days and then my itinerary is wide open. I'd love to check out some of England's gardens around London and outside, but since it's October will they be worth checking out? I'm guessing that the fall foliage will be beautiful.
I have the Kew Gardens, Chiswick House on my list along with checking out the gardens at Hampton Court. Is there a can't miss garden/house I should check out outside of London? I'd like to do a short trip outside of London. Is there a Garden Tour that I should check out?
