Gap of Dunloe

Looking for the best way to see this. Should we book a tour or just drive to Kate Kearney's Cottage and walk. I think we would be good for 3 miles round trip. If we opt to hire the pony and trap, what is a fair price?

I am interested in this answer as well, as my husband and I plan on hiking the Gap in July. We were planning on driving to Kate Kearney's and walking to the top of the gap (not the entire thing which i believe is 7 miles one way). I was under the impression walking to the top was a little over 3 mile, one way. Thus, about 7 miles roundtrip. Now I am wondering if I was wrong.

As long as it isn't pouring like crazy, we plan on walking it.

The tours are good but its a 7 mile walk through the Gap or pay for the Jaunty as an extra http://www.gapofdunloetours.com/

Can you just drive to Kate Kearney's Cottage and book the boat trip and Pony Cart there?

You book the jaunting cart directly at the Cottage but I don't know about the boat trip; I believe it is part of the tour package.
And then how do you get from Ross Castle (end of boat trip) back to the Cottage to pick up your car?

So I assume the best answer is to book the tour.

We booked the tour. We have been to Ireland several times and we still look back on this day as one of our best ever. We did it in April 2015 on a lovely sunny day, temperature in the high 60's.

We stayed in Killarney and were collected from our guesthouse by van. We were brought to a central location in downtown Killarney, paid, and joined a few others in a van. We were transported to Katie Kearney's Cottage. You can pick up bottled water & snacks here - also there are restroom facilities if you need them. The jaunting cars are there and you can book by speaking with the driver directly. We opted to walk and, yes, it is about 7 miles one - way. It is a spectacular walk. We had lunch at Lord Brandon's Cottage and then boarded our boat which took us through the Lakes of Killarney back to Ross Castle. Our captain was Dux O'Donahue and his dog, Charlie. Once back at Ross Castle we were transported back to our guesthouse in Killarney.
It took us about 2.5 hours to walk the gap but we kept stopping to take photos!! While walking, we were approached by jaunting car drivers who ask if we needed a lift - we decided to keep walking. I assume they still do this, so if you get tired take the ride!

Does anyone know if there is a distinct turning around point if we dont want to hike all the way to Lord Brandon's Cottage. We are not booking a tour and just going to hike some and turn around. I heard there was a summit about three miles in that many turn around at. Didnt know if I heard this correctly.

No, not really any summit. Remember, you are walking a gap between mountain ranges. I guess if you want to walk for a while you can really turn around anywhere, right? Let's say you can devote 2 hours for a visit to the Gap....walk for one hour and then turn around.

There is a slightly twisty portion and an incline where jaunting car passengers are expected to get off and walk because it is a little difficult for the horses, but it is not a summit. The gap is a VALLEY.

Can't help you with Strickeen as we walked all the way through to the Cottage.

Can anyone advise if Muckross House and Farm can be done in the same day as the Gap of Dunloe tour or is this pushing it?

I just got back from my Ireland trip in March of 2017.
One of our favorite days from our trip was seeing the gap Dunloe.
On the day we went it as a little dreary but still visible and less traffic on the road due to the weather.

We were going to walk up it but decided to actually drive up it. (I know... not usually advised.) we stopped at the kottage for a piece of apple pie (sadly they were out, but it looked delicious) we asked the waitress and she said most people walk it due to the narrow roads but she said if we wanted to drive it this was the perfect day to it.

It was an unforgettable experience. We literally drive straight through the gap and continued for some way. We had so much fun exploring and captured some great pictures.

If you plan to walk it, I would say you are pushing it. What time of year? July and August have extended hours for Muckross House so you might fit both.

July & August: Daily 09:00 - 19:00
September - June: Daily 09:00 - 17.30
Gardens open daily 08.00 - 18.00 with extended opening hours 08.00 - 20.00 in July and August.
