fussen or berchesgarten for a week..late may??

rick steves recommends fussen....but what do you recommend...? we'll stay a week in an apartment. we like mountain views and walks. castles are ok, too (we will have a rental car). a charming village for evening strolls suit us. all the posts about berchesgarten make it sound intriguing.

We had a similar dilemma on our vacation to Germany last year and ended up choosing the Berchtesgaden region. We ended up visiting both, but made Berchtesgaden our home base for 5 nights and then spent 1 night in Fussen to see the castles. After visting both, I was so glad we chose to spend a majority of our time near Berchtesgaden. Its much less touristy and the scenery is beyond stunning.

We stayed in a lovely apartment in Schonau, a small town about five minutes from Berchtesgaden and about 5-10 minutes from the Konigsee. We spent our evenings walking through the little town, and each morning we walked to the bakery for delicious chocolate croissants and then to the ATM before departing for the day.

From Berchtesgaden one could easily explore the Berchtesgadenland region, Salzburg, the Salzkammergut (Hallstatt is a must!) and various points around the region. Its perfect for hiking or renting a bike. We absolutely loved it.

If you are interested in an apartment recommendation, we stayed at an apartment that was just perfect for us. It was exceptionally clean and included a full kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. Both the bedroom and living room had doors that lead to a balcony with amazing views. The only downside is that the owner only speaks German, but she is a lovely older woman that reminds me of a kind, gentle grandmother. She left us fresh rolls on our doorstep each morning, and we had "conversations" about the weather despite our lack of German. The website is http://www.hinterbrandner.de/. We stayed in the Jenner apartment. You can use www.altavista.babelfish.com to translate the website. I also used babelfish to correspond with the owner to make our reservations. Otherwise, if you are looking for apartments you can also use http://www.berchtesgaden.de/en/startseite.html to find apartment listings.

All in all we LOVED this area and are planning on going back next year. If you are interested in seeing pictures, you can view mine at www.kodakgallery.com/tracybates. Look for the "Germany Austria.." trip under my albums.

Good luck!

Check out Oberammergau. It's a very charming village. They even have a nice indoor water park/pool. Berchtesgaden is nice, but not so much a quaint/charming village.

Berchtesgaden all the way!

Scenery far more spectacular and access to Austria is easy. Tracy is right-on given the choice between Füssen and Berchtesgaden. I'll be there about the same time so maybe we'll run across one another and I'll buy a round if we do.

I really liked Oberammergau. Lots of paintings on the building walls, wood carvings, etc.

I would definitely not stay in Fussen over Berchtesgaden, but I would consider the Garmish-Partenkirchen/Oberammergau area for the Castles, Linderhof, Ettal, and the church out in the middle of nowhere (can't remember the name).
