Despite the aspect of cruelty against animals for reasons of fashion - I can hardly think of a less practical outer garment for travel: a fur coat is heavy, very bulky, takes long to dry when wet, is a valuable you have to worry about, is not really weatherproof and often too warm. Give me a good outdoor jacket any time...

We like to travel in the winter and I've seen many women in wearing fur coats in Germany and Paris. I imagine in Switzerland this is true as well.

I was just wondering whether animal activists would be found (chucking paint etc) for the avoidance of doubt as I will be travelling shortly and it is cold. LSky is the only sensible reply and that is appreciated. As to the rude reference by "thursdaysd" that is quite uncalled for.

I would worry about paint attacks but only if this is very good fur, however if there are enough Russian goons about there will not be any problems from these people. I guess you know the temperature "weight" of your clothes so dress accordingly.

The forecast is for 10C (48-50F) later this week. Are you sure you need a fur coat for that? Especially as that is accompanied by rain.
If you have another suitable, waterproof coat I would suggest you take that instead. It will be more practical than fur, easier to transport and unlikely to attract attention of an unwanted kind.

I can't imagine a bigger clothing liability than a fur coat when traveling to Europe, no matter what the temperature, and PETA freaks or not involved. It's just a dumb idea. It's heavy, it's hot, it's a moral affront to some people, and it's ostentatious. Get a normal coat.

I'm not sure there are too many fur coats being manufactured these days. Most of them are probably vintage.
There was a lovely woman at an airport wearing some kind of big cat fur once. She told this woman who made a comment about it, "this coat if 40 years old and no one was thinking about that back then. It would be disrespectful to this animal not to wear it's lovely coat after all, that's why it died."
It would be a travesty if someone were killing tigers today for fur but if it's dead already, it's dead.
Has everyone burned their leather shoes?

If someone likes fur, they should be prepared for the consequences of wearing it. I have no issues with fur at all, but I once had a houseguest at my place in France who insisted on wearing a full mink coat everywhere, and we were reviled at many a stop, so be prepared for it. I have no issue one way or the other with it, but it's a darn stupid thing to be wearing a huge, heavy fancy fur coat in Montreux unless you are committed to making a fashion statement and want to potentially suffer the consequences.
