Ok I have wondered this for years and I need an answer now.
Why is it called Craven Cottage?

My First Trip to Provence and Paris...Loved!!!

because there's a cottage in the ground.
Obvious when you think of it.
Care to guess Cold Blow LAne?
The cottage is in the corner between the stands and the terraces. Don't know about the name "Craven".
It's all pretty academic anyways since Fulham doesn't play there anymore. They're sharing Loftus Road w/QPR. By the time they get back to SW6, the new ground will probably have some sponsor's name attached that's even worse than Craven Cottage.
Yes I KNEW there is a cottage there I have been there to matches, but that does not answer my original question. WHY is it called Craven Cottage? Who was Craven? Why did he/she have a cottage? Why did they build a pitch and stadium around his/her cottage? Is Mr/Ms Craven still alive? Does he/she live in the cottage?
Oh, and I could guess Cold Blow Lane, but I am way too modest for that mate.
Rather depressingly the cottage was called Craven Cottage when they moved there and no one seems to know why.
What about:
Spotland?
Gay Meadow?
Rough Guide to English Football mentions a Baron Craven who owned the land circa late 18th century. The currnent cottage doesn't go back that far, although it does pre-date the football ground. The original Craven buildings were destroyed in a fire.
Z, that is a superb answer and seems to make sense. I can buy that. I guess perhaps the cottage was Lord Craven's caretaker's house...I think he was the one mentioned in Lady Chatterly's Lover wasn't he?
And I do have to get over to Gay Meadow for a match so I can leave my Spotland! Can someone direct me to Gay Meadow? And Spotland?
happy to help:
