Fuessen to Vaduz or Lakes?

After viewing the castle at Neuschwenstein, we will drive to the Swiss lake region, staying in both Lucern and Interlaken, for our final week in Europe next summer. Assuming we get into the castle first thing, and are back on the road by early afternoon, it seems to me that Vaduz, Liechtenstein, would be a good break, and not a long drive. We could then continue to Interlaken area the next day.
I haven't seen much on Vaduz or Liechtenstein, just a little in my trusty Fodor's guide book. Am I wasting my time? Am I better off breaking the trip somewhere else, or going all the way to Lucerne? Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

Vaduz, and the rest of the pastoral little country, is a big zero, unless you're a serious stamp collector. It is very, very skipable.

Either Luzern or Interlaken are quite easily doable in an afternoon presuming you get out of Füssen by the early afternoon. Under four hours to Luzern, perhaps five to Interlaken, up to six depending on traffic and routing.

twenj

Vaduz is good for about a half hour break; maybe get some of their pretty stamps at the post office & have your picture taken by the "entering Liechtenstein" sign.
Vaduz is also expensive, even compared to Switzerland.
Having said that we once enjoyed a magnificient lunch there - you'll never guess what - Irish Stew!!!

We plan to overnight in a lovely town called Lindau on Lake Constance after we visit Neuschwanstein. It is about 90 miles from Schwangau. Then it's just 115 miles to Lucern or about a 2 hr drive.

I was just about to suggest Lindau myself, if you need a place to stop before Switzerland. If you can make it all the way to Lucerne, then my motto is 'reach the heavenly Swiss lakes asap.'

Thanks to all. There seems to be a concencus on Vaduz, and Lindau looks like a real interesting respite. I do want to get to the lakes asap, jw, but I worry about a "forced march." Part of the joy of driving is to pull off the road every once in a while to a village or an interesting looking detour, and I guess we really can't predict when we get out of Fuessen.
I take it it would be about 4 hours or so from Lindau to Interlaken? If I go south from Bodensee, there appear to be a couple of alternative routes to Interlaken: From Liechtenstein, west on A3 to Zurichsee, south on 8 to Schwyz, then Altdorf, skirting the umer see of Lake Lucerne, continue south to 11 and the Sustenpass over to Merringen.
OR - - - From Liechtenstein, south on 3-13 to Chur, then west on 19 over the Oberalppass, north on A2-E35 to the same 11 into Merringen. Any one have any experience or thoughts on these routes to Interlaken? As always, your comments have been very helpful. Thanks.

Are there any direct trains from Fussen to Interlaken? Can anyone recommend an inexpensive budget type accommodation in Fussen?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Rosa
