from hvar town, has anyone rented a car or scooter to explore island?
we are wondering if we should rent a car for a day. are there any routes to follow or special towns, views, etc?

We rented a scooter and went to the other towns on the island. There is a road that you just follow with turnoffs for the towns.
We stopped in the Hvar Town tourist office and they arranged it for us. It was pretty easy.
The rental company gave us maps, and, like I said, only a few roads so pretty impossible to get lost.

Click on my name and you'll see my trip report for Croatia. It has a lot of details. Below is a snippet about renting. If you read the report and look for 3/12 you'll see a description of riding the scooter in Hvar.
Definitely rent a scooter on Hvar. We used Luka rentals, but there are others. Their shop will probably be closed if you go off-season, but just call their cell phone number and they’ll be there in a few minutes. We actually had the tourist office call for us (but be careful because they close at 1pm). They originally wanted to charge us 200 HRK for a full day rental, but went down to 150 HRK (about $27). You don’t need to worry about filling up the gas tank as they will do it for you (and charge you the normal gas station prices). Unless you have ridden a scooter before, I recommend getting just one and sharing – they are a little tricky to navigate. Also, make sure whoever is driving is not afraid of heights (more info below in the detailed section).

They do not (at least I am pretty sure they do not), but there are lots of places that do.
Unless you have a lot of people, I would recommend scooters...they are fun and a good way to get around the island...

Lowcountry Islander, will you be posting a trip report on your return? I'll be anxious to hear about your trip. I'll be departing from GSP next year and am already enjoying the pre-planning. Any advice and guidance will be greatly appreciated!

if you're up for it - go to Zavala. It's located on the south side of the island. To get there you have to go through a long narrow one car width tunnel - it's defintely an experience. Also - the cove Dubovica, between Hvar Grad and Stari Grad is a wonderful retreat.
I'll be in Croatia this September also - Trogir, Vis, Stari Grad and Podgora.

hi alyssamma -- just re-read your trip report..loved it! we're leaving tonight.. i am hoping you see this and reply in the next few hours or so... hehe.. but i have a question.. when you had Ivo Gugic drive you to Montenegro, i'm assuming he spent the day with you - so when you stop to eat, do you all just hang out together? and is it proper/correct/acceptable to pay for his meal? thanks -- i am going to try to find him - that was my favorite part of your trip.. hanging with his family. If anyone else has some protocol response for me, i'd appreciate it as well... i've never had a driver or tour guide.

Ivo was very professional. He brought along his own stuff to eat. Basically he would drive us along the countryside pointing things out. If we wanted to stop (e.g., for a picture) we would. Then, when we got to a city, he would ask us what time we wanted to meet him at. We would then walk along (and eat if wwe wanted) while he would stay at the car. So, no issues there.
On our last city stop we did all walk together and we stopped and got a drink. I *think* we paid for his drink there, but I can't remember.
But, to specifically answer your question, in the cities you explore on your own (so eat on your own) and there is no need to feed Ivo.
