Hi Guys,

My son and I are traveling by car from Florence to Cortina d' Ampezzo this May (part of a larger trip) and would like to know of any recommendations for a nights stop-over (excluding Venice this trip). Would preferred smaller town but any ideas appreciated.

Hi Kiwi - What route are you planning to take?

Treviso, Padova, Bassano del Grappa, Asolo and Vicenza would be possible options if you're going the Veneto route.

If you're planning going through the Dolomites proper - routing through Verona/Trento - then Verona, Trento, Caldaro or Bolzano would be possibilities.

Otherwise if you prefer a mountain stopover on this route my choice would be Castelrotto or Ortisei.

Yeah taking the latter (Verona, Trento, etc.). Looking at a hotel in Corvara; Garni Piz da l'Ander? Was looking for a one night stop-over in a small Italian town about half way. I was just looking at the map and it almost looks as though I drive the entire route without the stop-over. Given the mountain terrain would that be possible? Wouldn't want to be traveling in the Dolomites in darkness.

Steve - You could do it in one day - but that would defeat the objective IMO.

The drive through the mountains between Bolzano/Castelrotto and Cortina is one of the most beautiful drives in Europe - not to be rushed, trust me.
Although it's only 2-2.5 hrs driving time you will want to take it leisurely, stop off and enjoy the scenery.

So if I were you I'd definitely plan a stopover. But I wouldn't choose Corvara (- that's only 40 mins from Cortina).

A better choice IMO if you want a mountain stopover would be Castelrotto (- a charming Tyrolean village in a lovely setting) - which is effectively the gateway to the Dolomites.

That would give you 2 relatively leisurely days driving (- with plenty of time to stop off en route).

Steve - Thanks for that mate. You're right of course, it should taken slowly and enjoyed. I'll book something in Castelrotto as suggested. Regards..
