Hi,
We want to travel to Chamonix after we leave Cinque Terre. I am having difficulty finding a train that crosses from Italy into France unless I buy a Eurail pass which I don't want to do because we're buying an Italian rail pass. Any ideas on how to do this (preferably without breaking the bank).
Also if anyone has information on lodging in Chamonix (or very close) I would love to hear it!
Thanks

It might be possible to take a train to Aosta and then pick up a bus from there to go through the MontBlanc tunnel. From le Cinque Terre, you'd need to head for Torino, and make a change there for trains to Aosta. You'd be looking at close to a full day of travel, even without the bus ride. If you could overnight in Aosta, it's a truly wonderful small Roman city.
It probably would break the bank, but the fabulous way to get from Italy to Chamonix would be to take the 5-stage cable car ride (I believe it starts in Le Thuile) over Mont Blanc. (Actually, I'm not sure they allow you to take luggage).
You didn't ask, but there are very, very few itineraries where people end up believing the cost of an Italian Rail Pass saved them money over buying point-to-point tickets, especially now that it is possible to get such amazing discounts on pre-purchased Italian train tix. You might want to check that out very carefully before purchasing a rail pass. Usually the website, Man in Seat 61, has all the answers.
Actually, it looks like you can catch the bus in Torino as well as Aosta.
