From Bologna to Barcelona

My daughter will be in Europe (Barcelona) for 6 months starting in January. Before she gets there she's traveling in Italy with friends. She still needs to:
1) book a train from Firenze to Bologna (where she will pick her luggage from a friend's house)
2) book either airplane or overnight train from Bologna to Barcelona

Could you send me links to the best place to purchase these tickets on line?

Thanks,

Jose

She doesn't have to book Florence/Bologna in advance unless she wants to find a discounted ticket.

No overnight train Bologna/Barcelona. Look at the budget airlines, but they have strict weight restrictions on luggage so I'm not sure that will work is she has a lot of luggage.

If luggage is an issue, she might do better to take the train across Italy and the ferry to Barcelona.

For info on trains in Europe, including buying cheap advance tickets, see seat61.com.

For the Genoa to Barcelona ferry, see http://www.gnv.it/en.html

For the Livorno or Civitavecchia (Rome) to Barcelona ferries, see http://www.grimaldi-lines.com/en/index.html

http://www.ryanair.com/ has daily Bologna - Barcelona flights for 24 EUR/32 USD, plus 15 EUR/20 USD for every piece of checked in luggage.
Florence - Bologna costs 12 EUR by Intercity train and 24 EUR by Frecciargento

Train connections along the Mediterranean from Italy through France to Spain are one of the stepchildren of European train systems. It would be a long journey with numerous switches, no slick all-night train unless you go as far north as Paris, and it would cost vastly more than flying.

If flights from Bologna (a rather minor airport) or from Florence airport (ditto) don't suit, she can get lots of choices from Milano Malpensa airport- easyJet currently has three a day for as little as 70 Euros or less, Vueling (the Spanish budget airline owned by Iberia) also flies the route, and others.

Trains from Bologna Centrale to Malpensa Aeroporto take exactly 2 hours, with a switch of trains in Milano Centrale.

The night train michel writes about - five different trains would all total to a staggering cost I would think- even with discounted tickets - better IMO to do the overnight ferries Thursdays is on about - most of these ferries I've been on for younger folks can be nice - often a bar/night club on board.

Of course money wise and timewise flying makes sense. If you want info on European trains (ideally she could break up the trip in say Nice and the French Riviera and or Provence - Avignon - have no fear of a single gal traveling along on trains or anywhere - many do it without problem) - check out these IMO superb site with lots on European trains - www.seat61.com (great info on discounted tickets); www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

AFAIK theNight Train EuroNight EN206 lv Bologna 22:34 arr Dijon-Ville 07:15 runs until December 14th only. Afterwards, the solution would be:
Bologna dp 19.15 - Verona 20.08/21.24 - Dijon ar 6.35
lv Dijon-Ville 11.22 TGV 6825, ar Montpellier St. Roch 14.57
lv Montpellier Saint-Roch 17.37 ar Barcelona Sants 20:48

It seems if she has a whole semester's worth of luggage she would be better off with train and ferry than:

Train - that will require multiple changes with all that luggage

Plane - which may well charge a high price for anything beyond her one basic bag

If you must go straight thru then forget the train - so many changes and a staggering cost - the overnight ferry is a great solution IMO - and have no fear of safety, etc - arrive in Barcelona the next day after a good night's slsumber (or an all-nighter in the ship's clubs!)

3 train changes within 25 hrs are not a lot, but if you take the ferry, you will have only 1 train change at Firenze SMN and a change from train to taxi at Leghorn.

BTW: instead of the night train, it would also be possible to take day trains, but with a bit more changes:
Bologna dp 7.31 - Milano Centrale 8.40/9.05 - Torino PS 9.52/10.15 - Chambery 12.48/13.39 - Valence 15.34/16.21 - Barcelona Sants ar 20.40

curious as to whether these schedules reflect the new direct Montpellier-Barcelona high-speed train - I suppose they do a sneckervd would have put another change of trains in somewhere - older schedules would reflect longer times - current schedules until in a few days the new high-speed line fully opens.

man that is still a long long day - not for me and most - too bad it can't be broken up say in Provence, France. Flying or the overnight ferry seem the best options - the train also involves several legs which probably must be priced separately so may be very very expensive to boot!

A stopover at Nimes (for example) is extremely easy. But I would prefer either the Grimaldi ferry or a low cost flight.
