French Switzerland--8 days

We are traveling to French Switzerland for 8 days in late April. We are considering using Geneva as a home base to see for a couple of days and then do half day/full day trips the other days. We thought that Geneva would be convenient to get to Chamonix and other French towns. The other option would be to decamp to Lausanne for the rest to complete our day trips. That way we would be closer to Montreux and Vevey, as well as doing a day trip up to Watch Valley and another to some wineries. Thoughts or suggestions appreciated? We prefer to use public transportation--we are well versed in Switzerland but this would be our first trip to this part of it. Thanks in advance and all ideas are welcome!
