Does anybody know any good info about private beaches in Nice? What is the benefit of paying when you can go for free? Any recommendations regarding which beach in Nice? Does everybody fo topless at some? OK, so this is less about topless beaches and more about private vs public ones, but whatever!

The private beaches are very exclusive, particularly the Carlton Beach, this helps to keep out the rif-raf. If you are the typical American, one would imagine you wish to cover yourself up, not expose yourself. Please stick to public beaches and stick yourself in a large sack to cover your distasteful figure.

Hi MW. The only private beaches in Nice that I'm aware of aren't really private beaches, per se; they're just private <I>sections</I> on the beach when you can rent a beach chair. On a travel report I found on the web from 1999, someone mentioned it's about FF70 per day. (By the way, the beach in Nice is not sandy; it's pebbly.) <BR> <BR>I <I>think</I> -- but I'm not sure -- that you can go topless most places on the Côte d'Azur. Far more acceptance of that, overall, there than in the puritanical U.S.

My 20 year old daughter is just back from Nice. She went to public beaches only (the average youth hostel does not rise to the dizzy heights of private access)and went topless...she said that most young women do. When I asked about her definition of the dividing line between "young" and "not" her useful reply: "go topless ONLY if you are not going to spend your whole time on the beach thinking about being topless..."

MW: the beaches in Nice just like everywhere on the Côte d'Azur are public. The hotels have "private" beaches where you pay around FF 60-80/day just to be allowed to stretch yourself out on a chair. One of my nieces (19y.) just spent 4 weeks in Nice at a language school. Shes was *very* disappointed by the beaches in Nice - dirty and as said above, pepples. <BR>The beaches in Cannes are nicer, but again expensive, if you spend a whole day. A simple mineral water is likely to cost at least FF 50, if not more. <BR>A lot of Europeans do not go to the Côte d'Azur anymore, at least not to spend their entire holidays. During August, it's a nightmare. The area around Saint-Raphael, Sainte-Maxime, etc. (West of Cannes) are nicer. I prefer by large the Atlantic side, like Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Bayonne, etc. <BR>The Côte d'Azur is known as being extremely liberal regarding beach wear. Go topless, if you like. But you will attract much more attention in a very classy one-piece bathing suit! <BR>

In Nice,the beach has public and private sections. The private sections are pay beaches. You pay for the use of an umbrella, chaise loungue, towel, and to have a fairly decent restaurant and somewhat clean bathroom. It's about ten bucks to get in. Women of all ages go topless in Nice-- it's no big deal. And believe me, after getting back from Italy, Nice almost seems puritannical!

Ursula: <BR> <BR>You say there are "pepples" on the beaches in the Côte d'Azur? What is pepples? Do you mean people or pebbles? Or is there some fake beach substance I don't know about? It couldn't be puddles, could it? Should I be concerned? Do I need some special equipment (sandals, flippers, extra-heavy beach towel) to deal with the pepples? <BR>Actually, I think pepples is a fabulous term for the REALLY unpleasant stones on the Med in the Riviera. I'll take the Atlantic coast anytime, too, although Mimizan-Plage was one of the ickiest beaches I ever had the misfortune to visit.

Beach at Nice is not sandy but all pebbled (not stoned people). Not very inviting. <BR>Beach at Cannes is sandy. Much more comfortable. <BR>Buy a coffee at McDonalds and change in their washroom. There is a number printed on the receipt that gets you into the washroom. <BR>When we were there very few were topless. I was but then again I'm male. <BR>Most of those who were shouldn't have been. <BR>
