French Basque region

Hi everyone. My wife and I will be in San Sebastian from May9th and back to Canada on May 17th. We plan to do an overnight or 2 to visit the French Basque side. we have a vehicle and I was hoping we can get suggestions on where to go and which city or location is best to stay for the night.

You could visit small Espelette a little inland: http://www.euskoguide.com/places-bas...lette-tourism/

and then perhaps go down to Saint Jean de Luz at the coast in the evening. http://www.saintjeandeluz.co.uk/en

And you have of course Biarritz close by.

And while in San Sebastian, I recommend to go for lunch in one of the several seafront restaurants in close by Pasajes San Juan/Donibane and/or in little Getaria. Had the meal of my life in one of the small restaurants down in the harbour in Getaria some years ago. Something like this: http://www.thepauperedchef.com/2007/...-in-getar.html

And about Donibane/San Juan: http://www.euroresidentes.com/eurore...s/san-juan.htm

I'd also put in a good word for Bayonne, where I stayed. Besides St. Jean de Luz I also side tripped to St. Jean Pied de Port (starting point for many people on the Camino Real) and Pau.

You might want to take a look at my trip report on Aquitaine, which includes the French Basque area; click on my name to find it. Between it and its attendant pictures you might get some ideas of where to stay and what to see.

We enjoyed visiting Aihoa, Ascain, Sare, Espellette, all quaint villages and the larger seaside resort of St-Jean de Luz. We bought beautiful linens in Sare at Basque Ligne and the special red pepper in Espellette..Also, www.maribelsguides.com has a helpful section online on the French Pays Basque as well as Spain's Pais Vasco.

We stayed in St Jean-de-Luz and liked it very much. Beautiful beach and nice town - great rail service if coming by train.
