French Alps or Riviera

Jump to last reply

Hi All,

I'm going on my first trip to Europe (from New Zealand) for end of August to near the end of September, and looking for some help in prioritizing some destinations as i only have about a month. My basic itinerary is:
London 5-6 days
Amsterdam 3 days
Somewhere near Dubrovnik (5 days)
Cinque Terre 3-4 days

After that, i would really like to see Cannes/Nice and Chamonix & Annecy, but i really don't see time for both before i fly out of Paris. If i am already going to Croatia, would Cannes and Nice be better to skip as they look somewhat similar?

I guess my interests are food, scenery & outdoors, culture meeting people & beaches. The art, architecture, museum isn't really that high on my list . I'm 27 so would like to go where i'm going to meet people my own age.

I know this is all very vague, but i guess my main question is how different are the French Riviera to Croatia? Would Chamonix be a bad place to go in summer?

Thanks in advance!

Chamonix is a very nice place in summer with lots of hiking. Obviously great in winter for skiing. When I was a student in Grenoble (nearby), that was one of the many places we'd ski.

That said, I'd head to the south of France . . . so close to Cinque Terre, and I would probably hang out in the Antibes/Juan les Pins area. Nice, sandy beaches, and the public ones are actually very nice (albeit crowded in the summer), younger crowd, more your age than Cannes for sure, and Nice's public beach is butt-crushing with it's pebbles and rocky surface and horrendously crowded in summer.

Using Antibes/Juan les Pins as a base, you could then take the very cheap train that runs all day long between Cannes & Nice and check out each place, and everywhere in between.

Juan les Pins, in summer, has a lot of music festivals, although at the end of August, I think you may miss the rock/pop outdoor music, which follows the jazz and blues festival before it. But the place has so much to offer, especially in the evening, that won't cost you a fortune.

You'll have a great time whatever you decide!
