My daughter (age 20) is planning to attend a language course at the university in Wuerzburg during the month of August 2017. I was planning to take her there and have a mini vacation for us a few days prior to her registration on August 1st. We will fly into Frankfurt. My husband and I were in Wuerzburg for a week in May so I have seen most sites and she will be there a month so we are more interested in the area near. I am open to ideas on what to see and do plus any information that might be helpful on transfers from Frankfurt. At the end of August she will make her way back to Frankfurt and homeward.

OK that is a a great area, I will ask my friend to reply who lived there for 12 yrs/Wurtzburg. Rothenburg is about 45 minutes away by car, and is a must see. Great Xmas store, Kathie Wolfhart right in town. Sue

The drive time from FRA airport to Würzburg is less than an hour, but since you have a few days, I suggest the following two itineraries Look these up and plot your own course and decide just where you want to spend a night.

1) At the FRA airport get your wheels and head west, past Mainz to Bingen where the great stretch of the romantic Rhine river tourism begins. Look at www.romantischer-rhein.de/en/#start (it’s in English).

You could easily spend a few days just between Bingen and Koblenz - there are castles to visit, it’s a major wine area, a lot of fun. One day you might want to take a boat and get back by train - look at https://www.k-d.com/ and www.bahn.de.

In fact, you might want to do this whole episode by train and boat, beginning right at the FRA airport, and only get a car after you’re done with those first few days. Maybe from Koblenz, to drive to Würzburg, or even get as far down the river as Cologne (the famous cathedral is right outside the train station, the chocolate museum is on an island in the middle of town, and the Kölsche beer is everywhere...).

2) Another way of spending those days: Head south from FRA, past Worms (hugely interesting historic town, read up on it) to Heidelberg, then into the Black Forest area to Pforzheim and on to pretty Tübingen, a university town through the ages, then to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and on to Würzburg.

Transfer from Frankfurt airport to Würzburg is easy, there are direct trains (travel time 1:20 to 1:30). I'd not rent a car in Frankfurt after a night flight - traffic on the Würzburg motorway is very dense.

There are many day trips to do, e.g. to Bamberg / Vierzenheiligen / Coburg, to Nürnberg, and to the many little romantic towns in the Main valley and nearby; to name just a few: (1) downstream: Veitshöchheim, Karlstadt, Gemünden, Lohr, Miltenberg, Klingenberg, Amorbach, Aschaffenburg; (2) upstream: Ochsenfurt, Marktbreit, Iphofen, Volkach, Kulmbach, Bayreuth. Near Rothenburg are Bad Windsheim (one of those forgotten litlle free imperial cities) and Ansbach, the historical cradle of former Prussia. For the Rothenburg trip (easily accesible via A7) there is a nice alternative route back to Würzburg along the Tauber valley, touching Creglingen (hosting a masterpiece of Tilman Riemenschneider), Weikersheim, and Bad Mergentheim (beautiful castles).

I'd get a street map of the region that marks historical sights (e.g. Marco Polo Bayern-Nord), look them up on the internet and write to the respective local tourist offices for more information. I would also suggest that this is not a good idea, whether you're headed to the Rhine or to the Würzburg area. Too much potential for drowsy or inattentive driving in unfamiliar circumstances.

Yup. Direct trains regional trains are available to Bingen or Bacharach or other Rhine towns - takes an hour or less to Bingen, 7-10 minutes longer to Bacharach. It's €8.25 to Bingen, €11.80 to Bacharach, on a RMV ticket purchased from ticket machines at FRA's Regionalbahnhof station.

Trains to St. Goar (Rheinfels Castle), Oberwesel, Boppard, and Braubach (Marksburg Castle) are easy to catch from either Bingen or Bacharach. The Rheinland-Pfalz day pass covers two adults all day long on such outings for €28:

For a siightseeing cruise: it's best to cruise Bingen to St. Goar or St. Goarshausen for the most scenic and most time-efficient experience (1.5 hours) - castles by the dozen dot the hillsides. Return to Bacharach by train.

The R-P day pass covers the ferry crossing in St. Goar (to St. Goarshausen) as well.
