Frankfurt-Wurzburg-Rothenburg
We plan to be in Frankfurt for a couple of days early next year. Will be renting a car, and plan to spend the first nite in Rothenburg. On route from Frankfurt to Rothenburg how much time would we need to do some site-seeing in Wurzburg,or is that being too ambitious considering we'll be jetlagged. Just want to make the most of our short time there, and suggestions for route from Frankfurt to rothenburg appreciated.

Depends on what time your plane gets in. 2 summers ago we flew into Frankfurt (I think our plane got in about noon) and then drove to Iphofen (an absolutely charming off the beaten track Bavarian village) where we were spending 3 nights. It's between Wurzburg and Rothenberg, and I think it was close to 5:00 before we got there. One day we drove back up to Wurzburg and another day we drove the Romantic Road. Wurzburg could probably be done in a morning, especially in the winter when some of the other local attractions might not be as interesting as in nicer weather. We actually liked some of the other small villages in the area better than Rothenberg. I'd highly recommend the Cadogan book on Bavaria because it highlights different routes and interesting towns.

Dear Natasha:

My husband and I did this exact same trip. We flew in, SFO to Frankfurt and picked up the rental car at about 1 or 2 pm. Then headed to Wurzburg to see the Residenz(sp?). This only took about 30 minutes from the airport. We were only at the Residenz and beer garden behind it for about 2-3 hours at the most. Our big mistake was drinking some beer at the garden. Otherwise, we ended up taking the Romantic Road to Rothenburg that afternoon but got very sleepy on the way. This only took about an hour and a half. It would be about half that time on the freeway.

So it is not too ambitious. I'm glad we did it that way. We enjoyed Rothenburg very much.

Good luck,
Michelle

We spent 3 nights in Wurzburg last year and REALLY enjoyed our stay there. Definately a place I would return to.
Lots to see, safe, few other tourists, beautifully lit bridge and buildings at night made for great photographs. Been to Rothenburg 3 times. It's best if you stay overnight there at least and see the town in the morning or evening after the hordes of day travellers and buses depart. We didn't much care for Iphofen ourselves.....walking around the path outside the wall was sort of a nice stroll, but nothing special. We liked Dinkelsbuhl the best of the romantic road towns and stayed there for a few nights last year. Nordlingen has an interesting wall walk but do know it's a "working class" town and has not been prettied up like Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl.
