Frankfurt Munich Vienna Venice Genoa Frankfurt - 1 month by Train?

We are intending to travel Frankfurt ( as air faires are cheaper and we NEVER been that part of the globe ) and then to take a cruise from Venice, hence decided to add cities in between to explore/experience.

We are very adaptable adjustable and travel economically

Need your help/ideas/suggestions/thoughts to make our trip in Europe, a month, a memorable one.

We travel on budget.

We are a family 2 adults 2 children 17+yr old twins - Our personality: we are not adventurous enjoy travelling, sight seeing, walking around, sitting on a bench on busy street looking around, having some local street food or so, may be places where locals gather and see how /what they engage , may be listen to music where locals gather together, may be markets where cheap stuff are and of course to add to it some iconic places too to make it memorable with some less expensive places/things to do only please....

We never been to Germany(Frankfurt) (Munich ) Austria (Vienna) Italy ( other than Rome and Genoa couple yrs back and they were only day trips) hence they are our point of interest this year to explore. But we are happy to hear if any other route that you would suggest we are happy to consider as we are still planning.

(Or you may suggest other more affordable cities in Europe, because our intention is to take a cruise ship from Venice ( air tickets are to Frankfurt Return) - so any route from Frankfurt to Venice Return , is okay and we are flexible as well for any suggestions)

Hence our draft travel plan looks like this, in brief : we intend to be in Frankfurt in early mid November with 2-3 nights and then to Munich with 2 -3 nights and then to Vienna 2-3 nights and then a night in Venice to catch the cruise on 22/11, after cruise on 29/11 we wish to spend in Venice 2-3 nights and come to Genoa, and then back to Frankfurt.....to catch our plane back home.

Need help planning our stay /things to see and buying economical transport possibly train tickets and kindly suggest options...

Our draft Itinerary looks like this.

A) 13/11/2015 in Frankfurt - pls suggest a back packer hotel near around train station* - sight seeing there* for 2 x days may be max in Frankfurt

Pls suggest * a train station/places on train or so, that will make our trip worthwhile

B) 16 November to Munich - 2 night stay there, similar stuff, to do like (A) and stay near train station if economical , at back packer or apartment if cheaper and pls suggest Where to stay and what we could do for 2days in Munich ?

C) 19 November to Vienna - 2night stay there, similar stuff to do like (A) and (B) and stay near train station if economical , at back packers or apartment if cheaper and pls suggest Where to stay and what we could do for 2days in Vienna?

D) 21 NOvember to Venice - only a night in Venice near port to hop in to MSC cruise ship on 22 Nov

E) 29th November - Venice 3 night stay - pls suggest accommodation after cruise trip to stay /explore Venice ( near and around city) for 3 nights for 29th and 30th Nov and 1st Dec - We may stay near train station if economical , at back packers or apartment if cheaper and pls suggest Where to stay and what we could do for 2days in Venice?

F)2nd December - Genoa - And pls suggest train or some transport from Venice to Genoa on 2nd Dec

G)13 December - pls suggest Train or similar tickets from Genoa to Frankfurt to travel back from Genoa to Frankfurt on 13 December

What transport /train tickets would you suggest and if any economy family/group pass that would suit us?

And how much approx budget

Or any suggestions to make it affordable/economical?

Many Thanks

Anita

Take warm clothes for that November cruise. You never know for sure, but it can be cold and windy by then.

You can put in any city and it will find you decent hostels.
I would do some day trips from Frankfurt. Cochem, Rothenburg and Boppard can be reached quickly by train. Plenty to see in Munich. http://www.likealocalguide.com/blog/...o-in-munich-2/

wear layers. I have been to Germany in Nov and it can be cold.

I know you asked about Frankfurt, but for this sort of a visit, I'd recommend Mainz over Frankfurt. From FRA trains take 10 minutes to Frankfurt - or 25 min. to Mainz. Not much difference. But overall a big difference in atmosphere - megacity Frankfurt vs. small city Mainz. You may not be familiar with Mainz as it's mostly off the tourist radar. Here are a few links to give you an idea of what Mainz is like.

The Mainz IBIS hotel is realatively inexpensive. It's well located near the southern end of Augustinerstrasse 1 block from the Mainz Römisches Theater train station. There is also an official HI hostel near the Volkspark, further south and a much longer walk or a bus ride from everything.

I would not call Rothenburg a day trip from Frankfurt. For one, it is over 3 hours to get there one way.

Better is the town of Büdingen, only 1 hour from Frankfurt.

From others who have told me that they chose Mainz over Frankfurt due to forums saying it was better, they have all told me they wished they had stayed in Frankfurt. More to see and do, more museums, much livelier, better train connections, more Farmers Markets. Just because Frankfurt has skyscrapers, doesn't mean it is a mega city nor that the neighborhoods aren't charming and beautiful. Mainz isn't a tiny town either, it has well over 200,000 residents. Don't get me wrong here, I like and enjoy Mainz and think there are great things to see there, but I don't think it is as good as hub as Frankfurt is, nor are there as many things to see or do.

I would stay in the Jugendherberge in Frankfurt. It is located right on the Main river and the German style restaurants are a few minutes walk from here in the applewine pub district of Sachsenhausen. Good for those on a budget.

Depending on your dates of travel, you might enjoy one of the many Farmers markets where the residents of Frankfurt like indulging in a glass or two of Riesling, or applewine. The market on the Konstablerwache on Thur. and Sat. is extremely popular. The one on the Schiller strasse on Friday is a good one, or head to the neighborhood of Höchst on Tues. Fri. or Sat. or to the Berger str. in Bornheim on Wed. or Sat.
